Hey SKUNKY

Came across at March Air Force Base Riverside, Ca in the tail of a SR-71. I see you leave your mark everywhere.

Re: Hey SKUNKY

Yup!.....usually nothing more than a urine stain here and there, but whenever I come across a Blackbird I'm usually inspired to whip out the paint cans...

Thanks for sharing that one, LzyBns!...

Re: Hey SKUNKY

You gotta love skunk works.

I can take umbrage, I can take the cake, I can take the A-Train, I can take two and call me in the morning, but I cannot take this sitting down. Now, if you'll excuse me, I'm going to take five.

Re: Hey SKUNKY

The one I saw at the museum on Offutt AFB in Nebraska had cobras on the covers. I wonder what drives the difference in design?

Either way, pretty cool.

Yup and more...I've been seeing lots of his relatives becoming 'roadkills' as of late in my neck of the woods!

That's a Habu, a cobra-like snake found in the Ryuku Islands. In the late 60s some SR-71s were based in Okinawa and the natives there thought the SRs resembled the Habu because of the shape of its chines, and so that's what they called them...Of course the Blackbird crewmembers thought that was pretty cool, and subsequently crewmembers themselves came to be known as Habus as well. Don't know what really determined which ones got the Skunkworks logo and which got the Habus and which didn't get any at all....

Incidentally, the Blackbird you saw at Offutt has since been moved to a beautiful new facility between Lincoln and Omaha where it now gets a respectable place of honor just as you enter the doors of the Strategic Air and Space (formerly SAC) Museum....(the covers are gone!)

Re: Hey SKUNKY

March AFB has some really nice jets but most are outside. It's sad to see them fading in the sun including a B-17G, B-24 an a A-26. The sun does take a heavy toll and the piegons too.

Re: Hey SKUNKY

It actually even goes beyond 'sad' and starts bordering on 'criminal'....
