"Chiran 1945" - new Japanese film

Anyone know about this film? The official site is http://www.chiran1945.jp/. Not sure how I feel about it. Does it glorify the "honor" of the kamikaze missions? How does it compare to the soap opera fiasco (or so I've heard) that was the Yamato movie?

I understand that this was financed by the ultra-nationalist mayor of Tokyo - need I say more?

Well, I can't say that I fault them for honoring the heroics of the Kamikaze pilots. From their prospective they were young men that selflessly gave their lives to defend their country. If you can honor German aces I say why not.

The problem comes in that they are a symbol of ultra-nationalism - the same ultranationalism that caused them to go to war with the U.S. in the first place. This not an apolitical film. It is being made with an agenda by those who lament the passing of the "good old days" of Imperial Japan and is financially backed by the very same people who seek to deny the existence of "comfort women", war crimes and who are altering textbooks to paint WWII as a war of American agression. Don't view this in the same light as "Letters from Iwo Jima", which sought to humanize the participants (a worthy goal) - it is an attempt to paint the tragic abuse of soldier's patriotism as glory. That is why not.

Hoverbug, Are you the moderator from eBay that won't allow sellers to show the swastika on the tail of the German planes?

I'll set aside any political bias I may have and probably still go see this movie. Love the Hayabusa planes on the opening footage!

Don't know anything about the film...but I see Marushin has already released an Oscar from the movie, almost $100, though...

Re: "Chiran 1945" - new Japanese film

I think everyone one on here knows my thoughts of the Japanese in WWII. Enough said.

I can take umbrage, I can take the cake, I can take the A-Train, I can take two and call me in the morning, but I cannot take this sitting down. Now, if you'll excuse me, I'm going to take five.

Re: "Chiran 1945" - new Japanese film

I can see this going nowhere good in a hurry.

My opinion has no relation to my opinions of the atrocities of Japanese forces during WWII. I believe that the war in the pacific can and should be understood from more perspectives than that one alone.

I don't know. I really don't have a clue about the politics behind the movies backing other than what I've read here, but that's not what I was speaking to anyway. I'm merely speaking to the concept honoring the pilots.
