Re: Live Buzzbomb Found in London

I think this quote says it all..

Hundreds of unexploded bombs from the war are buried across the country, according to government figures. They are unearthed from time to time, often during building excavations.

Not sure, I'd want to do excavation in the UK, sounds pretty dangerous..

Re: Live Buzzbomb Found in London

No joke. I've read similar stories regarding cities in Germany, WWI battlefields in France and Belgiumand of course there are the minefields scattered across the globe as well. In fact, I recall an article I read some time ago that there are teams which use reconnaissance photos to find unexploded bombs from the offensive vs Germany. 60+ years later who would have thought.....

Let's ensure that Jim doesn't take one of these home for his collection.

IIRC, there have been instances where old ordinance has gone off when hit by dozers/backhoes, but I don't remember if there were any casualties..

It would look really cool on a plinth at the entrance to my castle!

In German cities any building work has to have a clearance certificate before work can begin.
A special team has to check the site for any ordinance that may buried there.
Evidently we didnt make very good bombs and thousands didnt explode.
My German friend told me that around Stuttgart they find these things all the time.

God Bless America.

Re: Live Buzzbomb Found in London

During WWI it became fashionable to tunnel under the enemies' trenches and fill it up with explosions. Apparently not all detonations where succesfull and there are some unexploded underground stockpiles left. I recall a documentary about a small village in Belgium which got very lucky shortly after the war...

Re: Live Buzzbomb Found in London

Hi Gang,
Just on the subject of "Buzzbombs" I once saw on Discovery Channel where the "Sea Hunters" went through the flood tunnels were these and V2 s where built. It was something to think about when you saw the bits still there. In Australia we have both in the AWM.
Cheers

Re: Live Buzzbomb Found in London

Over here we still have quite some trouble with unexploded ordinance...

Last week, during runway extensions of the Duesseldorf Airport they had to defuse a 1000kg bomb. Interesting fact is that they found this one thru an aerial survey.

Even worse was the case of a milling machine getting blown up last year during an autobahn construction project. Unfortunately the driver was killed.
