plexiglass shelves

Has anyone used plexiglass or mirrors for shelving in their custom cabinets? My plan is to design/build a custom wall display case and I'm just looking for a few opinions.
Thanks,
Doc Z

You'll probably find that 1/4" glass plate is actually cheaper to get custom cut than plexi - even with finished edges.

Re: plexiglass shelves

I would be concerned about the ability of plexi to stand up to the weight of models over time.

I think a 10" deep 1/4 thick plexi shelf with the right supports will hold up fine for 1/72 diecast. I'm more concerned about the added weight of multiple glass shelves installed in a wall display case. Unlike most of the furniture type display cases that I've come across, I'd like to have mine up off the floor about 3 feet.

Width would be a factor in the "bend" factor with plexi.

Re: plexiglass shelves

1/4" plexiglass should be fine and is a much better choice than glass. My company Orange County Industrial Plastics makes displays cases all the time. We actually make cases for some of the diecast manufactuers. By the way, there is also mirrored plexiglass. Many of our displays cases have a mirrored back or shelf.

Re: plexiglass shelves

I've been watching for something like that for ship displays. I know folks use model railroad display cases for their ships. Is something custom incredibly expensive?

Re: plexiglass shelves

Not as expensive as you may think. The more custom, the more it costs.

Thanks- might look into that. Helps that I'm semi-local.
