New Detolf Colors

Thought some of you may like to know...

I stopped into an IKEA last week to pick up my 3rd Detolf dispay case (will modify later). At the store, I discovered IKEA now offers the cabinet with the following top/bottom "finishes" (ie contact paper):

White
Beech (only option before)
Black Brown

I was actually kind of bummed to see this because the black brown would have looked great in my office but I already have two beech finish cases - had to go with a third beech for continuity. I'm still debating if I can just spay paint the all top and bottom pieces black...

If any of you had been holding out for a different color - now is your chance!

Check it out here if interested...

Re: New Detolf Colors

Does anybody know a source to buy extra shelves for the Detolfs?

I plan to modify mine with extra shelves but wanted to buy the shelves without having to get (and pay for) special shelves to be made from scratch.

I really like the Detolfs I bought but because I collect 1/72 scale planes it leaves me with a lot of wasted space.

Re: New Detolf Colors

IKEA doesn't sell them in the store but you might contact them and tell them you broke yours and want to buy more.

Otherwise just measure the shelves and go to a glass shop- they will cut them to size and it is not as expensive as you might think. I did that with my main display case for ship.

I tried that but it didnt work, they said sorry but we dont supply them.
I went to a local glass place and paid £18/$36.
I was quoted up to £48, so it might pay to shop around.
Btw Detolfs over here cost $70.

Re: New Detolf Colors

Jim, what's with the prices over there.? I can get 1/4" glass to fit a Detolf cabinet for $ 8 Canadian per piece. At this time, I have 3 converted cabinets. 3x3 at a cost of $72 cdn.

Over here we call it rip off Britain.

I think Britain must be the most expensive country in Europe nowadays. Diecast is always double the cost of the US.

Re: New Detolf Colors

A question for all who use the Detolf: How well does this cabinet keep out the dust? The gaps between the glass sides appear to permit a significant draft. The price is exceptionally attractive otherwise.

Does anybody know a source to buy extra shelves for the Detolfs?

You might also consider getting some acrylic risers.

Question Re: New Detolf Colors

I'm about to order my first Detolf, probably black/brown shelf color, and I'm curious about what scale and number of die cast models you display. I'm primarily into 1:72; however, I'm starting down the WW 1 1:48 biplane path and need a clean, safe place to display the expensive little darlins. Frolm what I've read, guys who have them, love them.

I have 2 of these cases and I'm going to be getting a couple more. I did like someone mentioned a long time back, I forget who it was but it works great. I take the 2 wire racks (one for each side to support the shelves) and I get another rod welded halfway between all the existing shelf supports. With these news rods for shelf supports I now have 8 shelves counting the wooden bottom. The shelves are now about 7.5" apart and are great for 1/72 and 1/48. When you buy the case it comes with little soft plastic pieces that are supposed to fit over the shelf supports and keep the glass shelf from slipping and rattling. Since I added shelves I don't have enough of these supports so I buy some foam weather stripping and just peel the tape off the back and run it along the metal shelf supports. Before I do this I spray paint the metal rack with aluminum paint because it gets discolored from welding. I go to my neighborhood glass shop with one of the pieces of glass from Ikea and they cut me 4 new shelves from salvage plate glass. They sand the sharp edge off the glass and charge me about $20. The welding costs me about $25 and the weather stripping about $5 so the total addition costs about $50 and I have a case with 8 shelves and they look great. So for a little over $100 final price it is well worth it. I hope you understand my instructions.
