British Empire Day at Corgi Field

British Empire Day was celebrated last weekend at Stillwatershire International Airport (Corgi Field) with a fly-in of several British aircraft which were on public display. Having the weekend duty shift placed me in a good position to gather some photos which I thought I’d share.

1. An overview of Stillwatershire Airport showing a British Airways Boeing 707-336C carrying the registration G-AYLT and loading air freight on the civil ramp.

2. A view of the aft section of G-AYLT depicting the loading operations in progress. The air freight terminal is in the background under the tail.

3. A tug about to tow G-AYLT out of the loading area.

4. A Westland Wessex Hu.5 of No. 772 Squadron of the Royal Navy is towed out of the maintenance hangar after a periodic inspection.

5. From Australia came this Boeing 707-338C of QANTAS (Queensland And Northern Territory Aerial Service) registered VH-EBO. One of Corgi’s prettiest 1/144 707s.

6. Loading baggage on VH-EBO. The “V-Jet” logo refers to the Latin word “vannus”, meaning “fan”, which was adopted by QANTAS in 1961 when all their turbojet-engine 707s were converted to turbofans.

7. The catering truck from TWA is loading meals into the galley.

8. Over on the military side of the field this RAF Sentry AEW.1 (Boeing E-3D) of Nos. 8 & 23 Squadrons is receiving an external power start. The Corgi Field fire department stands by during this evolution.

9. A closer view as #2 engine is fired up. The Shell Oil truck is somewhat close to the intake, especially considering the inlet is larger than the vehicle. The fire truck crew are quick to see this and, being old airfield hands, are reversing rapidly away from the scene.

10. An unsuccessful engine start but with no ingestion of the Shell truck. A USAF tug is preparing to tow the Sentry to the maintenance hangar.
