Re: 1/48th scale Spitfire on floats project

Well this is what I accomplished yesterday on the Spit. Decal are on and probably need a bit more solveset to get some silvering off (Bane of old decals). I will be adding some exhaust stains today and also give it is final clear coat. Then on to the next project.

Have a picture of the Spitfire float plane prior to modification of the rudder and one after modification. Picture came in real useful in that the plans indicated the floats were extra dark sea gray all over but picture shows yellow underneath.

Re: 1/48th scale Spitfire on floats project

Well finally finished up work on the Spitfire on floats today. Fun project and I like getting to modify a kit with resin parts. Fedex also dropped of some paint I had ordered for my next project. So next week it will a new kit in the works. All in all I pretty happy with how it came out.

Re: 1/48th scale Spitfire on floats project

Great job, CC. One question on the exhaust stains. They seem rather light. Is this due to the kind of fuel used by this plane?

Re: 1/48th scale Spitfire on floats project

In a word,

Remarkable.

Heck you even fixed the crow bar on the door panel.

Interesting to note, the addition of floats hardly affected the performance of the Spitfire.

God Bless America.

Re: 1/48th scale Spitfire on floats project

Great job, CC. One question on the exhaust stains. They seem rather light. Is this due to the kind of fuel used by this plane?

I went through quite a few pictures and really did not find to many shots of Spitfires with really heavy pronounced exhaust stains. Ones I did come across were fairly light and flow pattern seemed to conform to the flow over the wing. Pattern initially fairly straight and then dips to conform with flow of trailing edge of wing and that pretty much was fairly representative to what I did come across in pictures. I went with three shades of grey chalk with just a bit of black right behind the exhaust stubs (Probably could have used abit of dark brown chalk too). Another reason for going fairly light was that of the few pictures I have of this aircraft, it looked fairly unweathered. Now I am debating on the next one. Probably going to be a PZL P.11c in 1/48th scale, though I have two Eduard kits that are kind of tempting too (1/48th I-16 and an Avia B.534).
