Airbrush suggestion

I'm thinking to buy an airbrush since i do modelling from time to time however i do not know which one is suitable for me. I'm looking for an affordable yet good quality airbrush. Any help/recommendation is appreciated. btw i'm a total moron when it comes to airbrush having used the Tamiya's canned spray all the times. Thx

I use an Iwata eclipse airbrush with an air compressor.. However, I started with a Testors Aztek airbrush and it worked fine for me for a few years until I upgraded..

Many regard Iwata as the best airbrushes available and the Iwata Eclipse is best suited for model paint. Iwatas also tend to be somewhat expensive. I use a Paasche double action internal mix. It's moderately priced and does a beautiful job laying down a smooth, even layer of atomized paint that dries with virtually no orange peel. Whatever brand you go with, I strongly recommend double action internal mix. It will take a little practice to get the double action triggering down, but it's well worth it.

I will also throw out a warning...STAY AWAY FROM BADGER AIRBRUSHES! They don't do nearly as good a job as Iwata or Paasche at atomizing model paints. They also do lots of other things that will leave you cursing the name BADGER for the rest of your model building life. I've had the misfortune of owning two BADGERs and they have caused me immeasurable grief. When I first used my Paasche, I could not believe how much better it performed.

Re: Airbrush suggestion

Thx. Keep them coming. So i'll know which brand to avoid which to go after...

For a budget below US100.00 is there anything good?

And what is double action internal mix btw?

Re: Airbrush suggestion

roh, a double action airbrush means you control both the airflow and paint volume with the button..You push down on the button for the air and regulate the paint flow by pulling back on it...Internal mix simply means the air and paint mix together inside the tip of the airbrush as opposed to an external mix where the air and paint come together outside the tip..With an external mix the button controls the airflow only. You adjust the paint volume with a separate adjustment knob.

I have an Iwata Eclipse as well (which is a double action internal mix)..It is the best airbrush I've ever owned, but it is pricey...Generally speaking, a single action external mix airbrush is easier to master if you've never used an airbrush before...It really doesn't matter how good a brush you get, don't expect to be very good with it until you've practiced, practiced and then practiced some more ....I would suggest getting a hold of some Corgi Mustangs for this purpose.

A very good airbrush is the tried and true Paasche H...It's a single action external mix and comes with three different sized tips. They've been around a long time and are very affordable.(you can get these brand new for under $40.00). I still have mine

Paasche H (good and cheap)

Iwata Eclipse HP-BS (very good and not cheap)

Re: Airbrush suggestion

Iwatas are expensive, but if you have a Hobby Lobby in your town and they have their 40% off web coupon, you can pick one up for about $60.00.. I got one for Christmas then went back and bought another one just to have a "spare"..

I think you'll be very happy with the Paasche H. Get a kit if you can, 'cause the kits often come with "fine" and "medium" spray heads/needles, a couple of different sized bottles, a compressor fitting, and a compressor hose. I'd also recommend picking up some sheet styrene, airbrush thinner, and some paint so you can practice. You'll need to do some experimenting, to determine the ratio of thinner to paint, that your airbrush "likes". As practice, I'd recommend shooting lines of varying thinkness to see how thin and how thick you can go. Experiment with different compressor pressures to see how pressure effects spray patterns and line consistency. Try a camo paint scheme, on a sheet of styrene, freehand (without any masking).

Re: Airbrush suggestion

Thx Skid. I have scouted the local hobby shops and they all suggested Anzen. A brand supposedly from Taiwan origin. Anybody heard about them? Cheap though. In fact it is so cheap it's rather suspicious.

So i should insist on other brand instead? They say they could look for it.
