I thought of the phrase after I recovered from the experiance later. "Walk softly and carry a big stink"...or something like that.

Perhaps it's "walk softly and carry a big Skunky?"

I should note that the effect works best on a matt finish. Also, as not all exhaust and gun stains are black, other color art pencils like browns can be blended. Colored charcoal or pastels could work with this technique too.

Another excellent example of your work No4, the exhaust track is spot on.
