Re: Planespotting

Well, I gotta say I rather liked, and was used, to his mug there......but his plane isn't bad either!

Don't worry, he'll be back -- he's just on leave for a bit

Re: Planespotting

Okay, the bombers are now in my neck of the woods and I've spent the last evening and morning trying to stalk 'em for good pics -- trouble is the airport is fenced off like fort knox and the hotramp is behind a chainlink fence when they are taxiing... terrible photo access for taxiing shots! To get the taxi and take-off shots I did get yesterday I had to find an access road and stand on the roof of my minivan -- good thing my wife didn't seet that!

Good news is I found the approach lane to the landing strip and they do come pretty low over the road at this point, I got lucky with my guesswork and they came in right over my head a couple hundred feet in the air. Sweeeeeeeeeeeeeeet. This mornign the wind had changed and I was in the same spot to see the Mustang take off twice and the 909 once. The Lib and B-25 did not go up today so far. Will try once more tonight to see if I can get those. Bookings seem to be way down this year, which should be no real surprise. I also want to get a good in-flight shot of the Mustang. We shall see.

Fixed the ISO problem with my shots but then got a bit too aggressive with my shutter speeds -- trying to get good prop blur, which is quite hard handheld with a long zoom.

The results so far:

Today's shots -- that Mustang is loud on full power! Awesome!

Pappy, you SURE have a way with a camera! Great pics! Should be in a book somewhere.

Re: Planespotting

The two head-on (apply directly to your..) shots of the bombers are sweet Pappy. Nice job. I hope you wiped the footprints off the roof of your van before Mrs. P sees them!

Oh man! Those front shots of 909 and Witchcraft are AWESOME! Also the shot of the Stang with gear comin' up... did you get a higher power lens, Pappy?

That's right -- a Dodge Caravan.... I straddled the roof sort of so I was standing on the supports, not the middle section And it was windy, very windy. But that was just for a couple shots -- most of the rest I was firmly on terra firma.

Went back tonight and got some good-looking shots of the B-25 and more of the Fort -- the Lib didn't go up -- plus a lot of fire fighter birds. Must be a blaze around here somewhere -- gonig to be one of those summers I think.

Thanks for all the kind words, I was determined to make good on my gaff with the Sactown shoot...

No Elmer, no new lens -- same one as the last year or two. The place I found got pretty close to the bombers on landing approaches. And I finally dialed in with the settings on the camera, I'll post more shots tomorrow.
