| Anither reason they might of had to file the flight plan is that more than likely the area of the Army-Navy game was inside of a TFR(temporary flight restriction), meaning no one was to fly through that airspace. The tower full well knowing where they were going, might of wanted something to cover his butt if something went wrong, but speaking as a liscensed Air Traffic Controller, I would have used a little more taste in addressing the issue. |
Good point about the TFR Stangdriver. When the Blue Angels practiced and performed on Oahu, they set up a TFR for the airspace around their practice area. They did the same for the Thunderbirds when they performed at Hickam AFB/Honolulu. Now I don't really know military aircraft flight procedures, but it seems to me that there could have been better coordination on this whole thing. There obviously would have been a TFR set up around the stadium, and as TFRs are usually announced in Notices to Airmen, there would have been minimum traffic near the stadium. I'm surprised there was nobody assisting with clearances, something most air display teams have. Then again, these Hornets looked like they were from operational units, rather than special display teams. Looking back at Waltz41s post, I erred in thinking it was a 10 minute sortie...it was actually 40 minutes. I'm glad the show got to go on.
Great pics waltz41.
