Fun with photo restoration

I do a lot of exercises to build and maintain my post processing skills. I usually try to work on subjects that interest me, so I tend to work a lot with aircraft photos. Here's the one I did tonight, I thought that it might interest you guys.

I found this image at http://prototypes.free.fr/a5/a5-1.htm

The Original:
<img border="0" src="http://prototypes.free.fr/a5/nouv/fj4_02.jpg" width="100%">

Restored:

Re: Fun with photo restoration

Very nice Mark! How long did it take...

(And if you wouldn't mind, how about a lesson in getting full size images to display in posts, all I seem to get are thumbnails... Been asking for the secret for a while, it's probably something obvious but darned if I see it!)

Re: Fun with photo restoration

Very nice job. AND I love the Fury.

I can take umbrage, I can take the cake, I can take the A-Train, I can take two and call me in the morning, but I cannot take this sitting down. Now, if you'll excuse me, I'm going to take five.

Re: Fun with photo restoration

about twenty minutes

(And if you wouldn't mind, how about a lesson in getting full size images to display in posts, all I seem to get are thumbnails... Been asking for the secret for a while, it's probably something obvious but darned if I see it!)

To start with I'm using hosted images. The original image is hosted on the site that it was found. My picture in hosted on my website onmarkint. I then use html tags to embed the images so that I can achieve a 100% width as apposed to a fixed size. This makes the image fill the post regardless of your browser size. (Don't do this unless your image is atleast 1024px wide)

In fact, I just showed this to Gavin about a week ago.

HTML Code:
<img border="0" src="http://onmarkint.com/images/restoredFJ.jpg" width="100%">
You can achieve the same thing with a fixed width by using the button. You can also upload your images from home using the image hosting system on this site. See the "My Photos" section underneath the smilies in the post editor or the "Image Host" button at the top of the page.

Which program do you use to edit and restore the photos?

Re: Fun with photo restoration

Looks alot better. One suggestion though. Run it through a noise reduction program to clean up it up a bit more. I use Neat Image's demo version which is free, or at least was when I got it.

I ran it through and attached it so you can see what it can do- note how the sky is now cleaner.

You could also clone out the glare on the insignia and the "N" in NAVY if you were very careful.
