Very interesting, Cavtanker.

As I recall, our brass sent a division trained for the North African campaign to invade this frozen island which was defended to the death---including a final banzai charge---by its suicidal garrison. What a mess!

Re: Japan seeks WWII soldiers' remains on U.S. soil

Interesting post Cavtanker, curious as to how much is written about this part of the war.

Brewster Buffalo, Hawk 75A, Fokker D.XXI, Polikarpov I-16, Fiat G.50, Macchi C. 200, PZL P.11c, Fieseler Fi 156 Storch ,,,, now those are real planes.

Thumbs up Re: Japan seeks WWII soldiers' remains on U.S. soil

A very interesting article. I guess sometimes we forget soldiers from both sides have families. It's great to hear the bones will be repatriated and identified. Some folks will eventually have closure.

Re: Japan seeks WWII soldiers' remains on U.S. soil

I found it interesting since we have heard of our representatives traveling to foreign countries to recover U.S. remains, but rarely have we heard of a former foe traveling to our soil to collect their remains.

Re: Japan seeks WWII soldiers' remains on U.S. soil

I hung back from posting on this thread but decided that truth will out.

I have reservations about this considering Japans denial of any war crimes and refusal to to give a formal apology for its gross mistreatment of POWs.

If I have spoken out of place I don't mind if the mods decided to delete my post.

Jim, I had similar (but not totally thought out) thoughts myself. On the other hand, though, they are a good friend and neighbor now, however.......

Lots. Look for a four book series by Stan Cohen called the Forgotten War. Many stories and books on the Aluetian Campaign, with many titled Forgotten Warriors or Forgotten Campaign. Any Anchorage book store will have dozens, so not really forgotten by some. The 11th Air Force memorial in Anchorage is a wonderful sight, commemorating the brave troops who fought there. There is a good History Channel show that takes some veterans back to talk about the campaign. Wrong uniforms, wrong intelligence, wrong equipment, etc. plus the weather made it horrible.

Here's an iteresting website about a P-38 that crashed on the island of Attu (same island of the Aleutians that the article is on), it has been restored recently as well.
