| This Day In History: Godzilla Opens in Japan  The first Godzilla film opened in Tokyo more than 50 years ago, and its 20,000 ton star, an enormous lizard, has been smashing up cities and towns ever since. Initially inspired by King Kong, Godzilla soon spawned several other motion pictures and TV shows. Its widespread popularity inspired Japanese filmmakers to develop a number of other monsters and heroes, such as Goro and Gamera.
