It is indeed a shame the Tomcat's gone but all good things must come to an end. I just hope they keep a sufficient amount of them for preservation.

The trend to reduce the number of types in service worries me.

Britain will soon rely upon one airframe, the Typhoon.

It wont be long before the Harrier is retired, the Jaguar is gone, Tornados are on the list to go.

What if the much vaunted Typhoon is discovered to have a major flaw in the airframe that only comes to light a few years down the line and whole lot are grounded.
I think the term Jack of all trades and master of none springs to mind.

I see this trend in the US and I think its dangerous, it is possible that in time the US may have at most two types of fighter/bomber,

Without writing pages of stuff you can see were my post is leading.

Come a major shooting war its dangerous and very limiting to have armed yourself with so little in the way of options.

I hope so too. I love watching the F-14 on displays at airshows.
