Timbuk II would have been my next choice.

...Timbuk II...Lol.

I can't remember the Timbuk I.

I was hoping for something like Gryphon, but naming aircraft is way above my paygrade.

A totally dumb name....

Come on Skunky the Lightning name is rich in history.
It's a great name.
After all America's ace of aces Richard Bong flew the Lightning of WWII.

Re: JSF - may not be news to you

Well, ....okay then. The pilots will end up calling it something else anyway (No F-16 driver will ever tell you he flies a "Fighting Falcon")...

Are they going to get Richard Bong II to fly this one?....

Amen! The funny thing is how many people who deal with the F-16 on a daily basis who have no idea that it's referred to as a "Viper". I was talking to a guy who works in a Combat Logistics Support Squadron, and when I called it a Viper, he corrected me. I had to steer him over to one of the depot test pilots and ask HIM what the nickname of the plane was before the young lieutenant would belive me.

In any case, not many "II"s have been known by their given name. The first proposed name for the F-16 was Mustang II. Lightning II was on the drawing board for the F-22. Then we have the Thunderbolt II, the Lancer II and the
Texan II. Really, the only one I can think of that stuck is Phantom II.

It will be interesting to see what the pilots actually end up calling the F-35...

That name sounds better then Fighty Falcon.I have heard from my bro who is a Navy F-14 Pilot say Viper a few times and i asked him what's that he said it's nick names pilots use for their aircrafts.
They use the F-16 in some of their trainings.
