I just don't know what good a "safety stand-down day" would do here......Just because there were a couple of racing-related crashes this week in Reno (unfortunately it happens - it's not the safest sport in the world) an unfortunate airshow accident last week at Oceana and the disappearance of an experimental aircraft and it's adventurous pilot, shouldn't mean that airshows which have been scheduled years in advance for this weekend should be cancelled......(especially since I'm going to one tomorrow ).
Yes, each of these tragedies should be fully investigated to try and find a cause and prevention, but I hate knee-jerk reactions to situations which just don't accomplish anything other than to needlessly disrupt everyone's lives....
Not to sound callous or uncaring, but we can't cover the world in nerf material, folks........Stuff happens, planes crash, people die.....When it comes to such activities as air racing and aerobatics, the participants know the risks and accept them...The show goes on. |
I never said anything about cancelling airshows. And, you're right, these people know the risks. But, one thing a safety stand down will do- it will make people ask themselves if they are getting complacent. It is also an ego check, making sure people don't get into the "it can't happen to me" mindset.
Now, I'm not saying complacency caused these crashes- but it's something flyers need to be asking themselves. If they're not, somebody else has to ask them. Anybody who lets their ego get in the way, or gets complacent, needs to take a break from the cockpit.
Accidents are caused- they don't just happen.
BTW, my suggestion about a stand-down is just that- a suggestion.
