Re: Return of the Navy Blimps?

That would be wild to see the U.S. Navy using blimps again. There are a few cases of blimps sinking German U-boats.

I can take umbrage, I can take the cake, I can take the A-Train, I can take two and call me in the morning, but I cannot take this sitting down. Now, if you'll excuse me, I'm going to take five.

Re: Return of the Navy Blimps?

That's cool. Maybe they'll re-use the landmark dirigible hangar at Moffet Field, Mountain View, CA to house those Blimps...bring back that ol' nostalgia once more.

Re: Return of the Navy Blimps?

The U.S. navy wants to demolish the hangar at Moffett because of the high lead content in the paint, and is surrounded by asbestos and other toxics which were used in its construction 75 years ago....I can't imagine the Bay Area without this landmark...It's visible for many miles...It would be sad for this icon from an already nearly-forgotten era in naval aviation to disappear...

My idea: The navy could just put up signs around it asking people not to lick the paint or climb up on the roof and sniff the shingles and everything should be okay....

Re: Return of the Navy Blimps?

If this were a valuable historic site in the UK it would be covered by so much legislation and red tape to stop people from altering it, it would make your rug spin! Enough of short-sighted ginks and up with blimps!

I support Skunky's views. There are many more dangerous toxic hazards which belong to the US goverment and should be got rid of first.

George W Bush should be first in line.

Now that's a terrific idea, Skunky! Why didn't I think of that!

Re: Return of the Navy Blimps?

I would hate to see Hangar 1 go, it does at least we here up in the Pacific Northwest would still have one left in the form of the Tillamook Air Museum.

A divergent viewpoint may be in order here - the hangar should only be saved if the asbestos contained therein can be safely removed so that it's no longer a health hazard.

Asbestos is not something that should be trifled with as it is bl**dy dangerous and makes some other toxic substances appear positively benign in comparison ...
