Re: Is this the end of a proud history of the British Royal Navy?

Didn't we sink the " Cavour" at Tarranto? Did they dredge her up? Will she be able to sail as fast backwards as well as forwards?

Just kiddin'

Don't worry about all that hardware out there. We Brits have a secret weapon which disables all the electronics of any system without the need for a nuclear pulse air burst.

The problem is that it also disables our electronics too! Oh well, back to the drawing board!

Re: Is this the end of a proud history of the British Royal Navy?

While unhappy about the news regarding cutbacks in the Royal Navy, and think the topic worthy of much discussion (will the planned new carriers ever see the light of day?), I'd also like to see overtly political statements/discussion be kept off the Model Hangar or confined to some sort of off-topic thread or forum. Ironic for someone living in DC, but we're swimming in politics here and it's nice to get away from it at the Model Hangar.

I agree Ted, I don't like to see politics in forums.

BUT - when people start throwing mud at the poms us Aussies get a bit upset - because that's our job

Latest score: Australia 5 England 0 http://www.news.com.au/heraldsun/sto...91-661,00.html

Didnt you just know the Aussies wouldnt be able to resist. They also suffer from selective amnesia. Like what happened to them against England the last time!!!

Yeah but...no but, your win was by a very narrow margin while 5 to 0 is a whitewash by any standards

Re: Is this the end of a proud history of the British Royal Navy?

BTW I liked the poll in the newspaper, Anyway my upside down friend, the best team won and I have no complaints. Shane Warne is a hero of mine. I dont care which team had played OZ they would have been beaten. They were superb from start to finish. HOWEVER, you are now back among the mortals . Your three best players gone!!! We shall await your visit to Pommie land with interest. Pity we have to wait so long. You must admit that we can only get better. Whereas you guys are going down the hill. True Jim, the next round should be closer with three old pros retiring which will be good for the game as they say.

Meanwhile back at the thread Now that the UK has finally repaid its WWII debt to the US they might give you guys a good deal on one of their slightly used carriers - they have one or two to spare I hear

Agreed...
It's easier to get sucked into than I had realized.

Will never happen. Not because the US won't give or sell them, but because the costs to operate them are too high- especially crew costs. Kitty Hawk which is going to retire in 2008 needs 4,500 men to operate. Keep in mind that the proposed British carriers are aiming for a crew of 600.

The Hawk will be 46 years old this April. By the time you refit her for Royal Navy use she would be 50 years old. No navy wants to deal with 50 year old ships if they can help it.

The US has several times offered the Tarawa class amphibious ships to various navies. They could be used as VSTOL carriers. They offers have always been refused due to the operating costs. Those ships require almost 1,000 men to crew.
