Re: Next generation: A-10C arrives at Davis-Monthan

I got to go to visit and hang out with the 111th FW today at Willow Grove. They had a friends and family day, and one of my re-enacting buddies is stationed there. Apparently we have 1 Charlie model, which I got a nice walk around. You can't tell any differences on the outside, but it's cool to know we have one . They are doing some mods at the base and there was an Idaho a-10 there awaiting the mod (don't know what it was however). I did get a good look at the new laser targeting pods they are hanging on the hogs, pretty cool stuff.
Also, I got to talk with one of the pilots for a while. He showed me some video of him flying and training at Ft. Drum where they can go with some big ordanance. It was really cool. One video he showed me was that of one of the pilots had an old piece of $4!+ car that they paid to get towed there and put on the range, after several hours of working removing anything that could be flamable, (basically gutting the car). So the guy that owned the car made his pass, and missed everything....however, the 'hogs always travel in pairs and his wingman came in, and....(doing no work , time, or money spent on setting up the car) nailed it head on....even with training 30mm rounds it still lit the upholstry on fire! Pretty cool little video.
And oh yeah, found this out as well, it's a complete myth that the gun's recoil velocity slows the A-10 down, pilot said it just shakes the airplane to hell!

That is pretty wild. I had heard that myth before, but never talked to anyone to confirm it.

I can take umbrage, I can take the cake, I can take the A-Train, I can take two and call me in the morning, but I cannot take this sitting down. Now, if you'll excuse me, I'm going to take five.

I'm just glad to know the old hog has a new lease on life. I can remember being about 4 getting to watch A-7's and A-10's do target practice at Camp Atterbury and they certainly knew how to put on a show
