Re: Paul Allen's Flying Heritage Collection

Where did you get the pictures?

I went to his old location and was told in no uncertain terms if I posted any of the pictures I took I would be sued by Mr. Allens layers.

The old location was amazing you could walk all around the planes get underneath them. The original set up had steps next to some of the planes which allowed you to look into some of the planes cockpits.

The pictures confirm Paul Allen has purchased Doug Champlin’s Fw 190D which had been located at the Museum of Flight in Seattle after the rest of his collection was sold to the Museum. Although I loved the display of Yellow 10 in The Museum of Flights Main Gallery it is amazing to have a Fw 190D, Bf 109E, Fi 156 Storch, V-1, FL 103R & Me-163 all together in one spot.

The Ki-43-Ib was restored to flying condition by Tim Wallis's New Zealand based Alpine Fighter Collection in the 1990s

At least it is nice to see the admission price has gone down from $20 to $12 for adults.

From the Flying Heritage Collection web-site:

"Photography
Non-commercial photography within the exhibit is permitted. Commercial photography is not permitted without prior consent from Friends of Flying Heritage staff."

Unless this is a commercial web-site and the pictures are being sold, there is nothing here to attract any lawyers. Of course, the posting here will attract a bunch if visitors out to see the collection.

I read the same legal notice on the web site before I went the first time and was surprised by the legal debriefing I received when I arrived at the museum.

The staff were very paranoid and kept reminding me that I should not post pictures on sites such as airliner.net which is not a commercial site.

I am sure the status of personal photography has changed now that access to the collection has changed from observed tour of a private collection to a self passed museum.

I never posted pic because I didn’t want a Billionaire giving me legal issues; due to the change I will post some pics the near future.

The photos I posted were from a Seattle area newspaper that covered the grand opening event.

Re: Paul Allen's Flying Heritage Collection

The I-16 page on the Flying Heritage Collection web site has some questionable data about how many I-16’s survivors remain. The site says there are only 5 in existence yet Tim Wallis' Alpine Fighter Collection restored six I-16s & three I-153s to an airworthy condition in the 1990’s. Jerry Yagen had another one restored in Russia. If the museums I-16 was rebuilt at the same factory where it was originally manufactured that puts the number much higher than just 5.

Location of Tim Wallis' Alpine Fighter Collection restored I-16s
1 - Commemorative Air Force (US)
1 - Jerry Yagen (Virginia, US) & A second I-16 restored in Russia
1 - Fundación Infante de Orleans at Cuatro Vientos airport (Madrid, Spain)
Several awaiting sale (New Zealand)

Re: Paul Allen's Flying Heritage Collection

Paul Allen has three Zeros not all of them are complete, one in fact was found in a auto junk yard, it looks as if one of them is on display at the museum in a partial restored condition.

For those fast mover fans he also has a MiG-21 a F-105 & 2 F-8’s. The Crusaders were previously flown by Thunderbird Aviation/Higgins Aviation as recently as the 90's. Paul Allen registered both aircraft to his Vulcan Warbirds Inc organization. The four jets were kept in a separate hangar were they did maintained on the warbirds and were not considered to be on display. All of the planes were either in flying condition or are able to be returned to flying condition at the time of there acquisition by Mr. Allen.
One of the F-8‘s is a hybrid, it has a fuselage from F-8K 145592, tail-section from a F-8K, F-8L wings, and fitted with an F-8J Pratt & Whitney J57-P-55 engine. Non-essential military equipment was removed, and state-of-the-art avionics installed.
The second Crusader N37TB came from MASDC at Davis-Monthan AFB, ffice:smarttags" />lace w:st="on">Arizonalace>. This second plane had a BuNo of 145527, and was a stock F-8L.
