I'd imagine that the response you've got (re; taking pix at the perimeter) will be commonplace with terrorism ruining things for us genuine enthuiasts - Gawd knows they've even cancelled all the wonderful USAF airshows over here that used to be so commonplace (with Camo'd F.4's in abundance at one time !).

Over here, I guess it depends on the base you go to. For instance, Shaw has a few gate guards outside the base perimeter, close to the entry post. I pulled into the visitor parking lot, walked over to the guard shack and asked if it would be cool for me to take a few pics. Their response was "Yes go ahead, but don't touch the airplanes, and don't point the camera towards the base itself." That was reasonable.
But, if you pass by a base where you can see the flightline from the highway, do not stop to take pics. The control tower will usually call the local (or state) police to come check you out.

The same is true for the gold depository at Fort Knox. Don't stop to take pictures. Even though it is probably 300-400 meters from a 4-lane highway.

Re: New England Air Musuem

Yes that is Windsor locks and the A 10's lined up was real cool!! To bad your losing them, I would love to be there when they are taking off and flying around!!! Here is another pic for ya rush!

Tank Nut,

I live in Somers which is about 15 miles due east of the airport. Roughly 2 to 3 times a week the A-10s buzz over my house. Usually they've just taken off or are coming in for a landing. Sometimes they are real low as they practice low level flying in between the Connecticut hills in my town. And on holidays like Memorial Day and the 4th they are zooming back and forth to do fly overs for parades. You can always tell it's them because their engines whine rather than roar. Years ago I worked with a guy whose father was the munitions chief for this unit. He arranged for us to tour the base and even sit in the planes. Man! Those birds are huge! If I can find the pictures I'll try scanning them and posting them. A moment I've never forgotten. Back then they wore the European I two tone green and dark gray camo. Today they are back in the all gray color scheme.

PS: Ive just added some of the pictures I've found. I aplogize for the quality - these are over 20 years old (March 1981)!

Re: New England Air Musuem

I went to Ellsworth AFB during the 1980s as part of a family trip. We got a base tour and we were allowed to photograph the flight line from the top of a hill as part of the tour. But, we couldn't go down the hill and get closer to the security fence and take pictures. I still have those pics in a box somewhere.

Have always found that asking at the gate guard house and suggesting that you shoot from inside away from the base was always met with success. When travelling in the UK in the 80's I was always extended every courtesy. The folks at Leauchars in Scotland even suggested a spot off the road where I could take shots of the 4 minute readiness hard shelters. Andrews AFB always used to let visitors in to visit the ANG... that has changed. Eglin and Langley were always fun places. Tends to be how you ask, who you ask, and the state of readiness. Asking for the Public Affairs or Officer of the Day tends to work.

Re: New England Air Musuem

This place is great....Go to the website and get there during one of the open cockpit day's....Nothing like sitting in a good old warbird. Took my dad a few years ago, couldn't get him out of the super saber....he was the same age as the guy that flew the plane and they talked for hours.

Place is awsome!

Re: New England Air Musuem

TN, do you have a pic of yourself next to the B-29? I got to see FiFi when I was junior high...or grade school. I have a pic of me next to an engine, and one propellor blade was longer than me at the time.

..and if they'd a known you were coming I'm sure there would have been a fence (electrified) around the entire museum....

Cav, with the diameter of each prop assembly coming in at 16 ft. 7 in., that little tidbit doesn't surprise me much...In fact I'd be quite surprised if one blade wasn't still longer than you...
