Marshall Museum - Overloon, The Netherlands

Last edited by trex0770 : 11-05-2007 at 10:38 PM. Reason: add info
Just wanted to post some photos from my recent visit to Liberty Park and the two museums located there (The Marshall Museum and The NationalWar and Resistance Museum of the Netherlands) in Overloon, The Netherlands. The town of Overloon was the site of the only major armor battle in the Netherlands during WWII and the museum has an extensive collection of armor and other military hardware.

The first few pictures show tanks that were disabled or destroyed and abandoned during the battle. The rest of the photos are from the Marshall Museum which houses a WWII area and a Cold War area. The Marshall Museum and the National War and Resistance Museum of the Netherlands are situated within Liberty Park (which also has armor, artillery, bunkers and other various military equipment displayed in the park also).

The Marshall Museum is huge and has a large and impressive collection of armor, artillery, soft-skinned vehicles, aircraft and various other pieces of military equipment from WWII and the Cold War. The museum even had scaled aircraft and ground vehicle models (see pics)!

The National War and Resistance Museum of the Netherlands is also very impressive with it's collection of artifacts, personal stories and detailed history of the world leading to and during the Second World War.

I only visited for a few hours but could have easily spent 2 days there. The museums and park are really well done with my only complaint being that the displays and stories were not all translated from Dutch. Many displays were in English, Dutch and French but most were just in Dutch (including the audio).

There was a diecast model shop very near by (about a minute's walk from the museum) but I ran out of time and didn't make it there. This might've been a good thing because the exchange rate from dollars to euros is horrendous!

Anyway, enjoy the photos and thanks to Feefall Kiwi for the heads up on this museum.

Sorry for the crappy quality of some!

Wow! Very cool pictures. Thanks for sharing them. That Sherman looks like it took a hit on the left side near the turret. Is that what happened?
Those models are great too, long with the display shelves.

Mike, you're good! The Sherman was hit right at the seam of the turret and the hull on the commanders side. The cool thing is you can get right up next to it and touch the tank. The turret was blown clear off (according to the description) and the projectile entry point is barely noticeable.

The second picture is of the underside of the Churchill which ran over a mine. It doesn't look like there is any damage until you walk to the left side of the tank. The description is third to the last picture.

Yes, I saw that too. The mine blew part of the track off. I guess the British just left that Churchill behind. What happend to the Panther to get it looking like that? Any idea trex0700? Thanks again for the great pics to share.

IIRC, the Panther was hit by a pair of Shemans and the entire crew was killed. There were several strikes including the one that killed it in the right side wheels. The Panther definitely was disabled because one of the wheels was blown off & mangled. It was sitting in Liberty Park for years before being brought inside.
