| Re: Ottawa Aeronautical National Museum re-visited 2006
It's a tilt wing, which is actually a fair bit different from a tilt rotor. When a tilt rotor is hovering or transitioning into a hover, it is working pretty much like a helicopter. The tilt wing is a lot more problematic (though simpler from a mechanical standpoint) as it requires a tail lifting rotor to provide pitch control while hovering or transitioning. This adds extra weight and makes it difficult to seamlessly integrate the flight modes. That said, the CL-84 was actually a refined aircraft when they were done with it, but like all VTOL, the price tag was very high and there just wasn't the mission requirement to justify the capability. The American effort, the XC-142, was a larger, but more technically immature design than the CL-84. | ||||||||||||||
