This past weekend I had the opportunity to visit the Tennessee Museum of Aviation in Sevierville, TN (close to Dollywood). I live in Virginia but I am originally from east Tennessee and during a visit my son and my dad and I took a trip to the museum. The museum is located on the premises of the Sevier County airport which gives the TMA its unique cache...flying museum aircraft. The stars of the museum are two P-47Ds that frequent airshows around the nation (they were also featured on "Mail Call" earlier this year), but the museum also has flying examples of a TBM, PBY, and Grumman Albatross. The other static displays are quite good with 2 MiG-17s, 1 MiG-21, 1 F-86, 2 T-33s, 1 P-51, and several others. The PBY and one of the P-47s was away when we visited. The collection was well laid out and accessible for such a small museum. Next to the main hangar they have a small artifact museum that included some real treasures including Jimmy Doolittle's Medal of Honor and a fantastic art and photography archive. If you are in east Tennessee, this museum is worth a visit, although probably not worth taking a long trip just for this (luckily it's right next to the Smoky Mountains National Park, so that's not a problem). However, they will be having a warbird fly-in on Oct. 6 and judging from the photos of the last fly-in, it would be worth a trip.
