East Kirkby Lancaster

Talking to Timbo on another thread, I thought I'd better post this on here, before we go too far off-tangent (re; thread).

It's a shot (care of Gareth Horne) of the beautiful, active & probably capable of flight (but not allowed under stringent C.A.A. rules) Avro Lancaster, NX.611, (nicknamed 'Just Jane') based at the old W.W.II.bomber-base, at East Kirkby, in Lincolnshire.

She is allowed to perform fast-taxi runs.

Re: East Kirkby Lancaster

It is sharp looking, that is for sure.

I can take umbrage, I can take the cake, I can take the A-Train, I can take two and call me in the morning, but I cannot take this sitting down. Now, if you'll excuse me, I'm going to take five.

Re: East Kirkby Lancaster

That's beautiful indeed.
I can only imagine a flight in that bird. I wonder what it takes to get a seat.

Hi Parsig, you mean like this............. (attached thumbnail/PICTURE)

Haven't asked or found out yet, but she wears different codes, each side.

One is probably her real/original codes (that NX.611 wore in the '40's).

I presume the other may be in respect of the Panton Bros (owners) wishes, to Honour their elder bro', who was killed whilst flying night-bombing missions in Halifaxes, over Nazi Germany - which is the reason why they'd bought the Lancaster NX.611, in the first place (as Halifaxes unfortunatly, are rarer than fresh Pterydactl eggs).

Re: East Kirkby Lancaster

That's it! Wow, the tail wheel is up and everything. They can't fly it or they don't fly it? I went through the Canadian one VR-A last summer in MI.

Wonderful experience.

Re: East Kirkby Lancaster

Great stuff - thanks Hornchurch! I've been to East Kirkby myself but unfortunately not on a taxi run day. Just a phenomenal place and one of the high points of my trip. Did you get a look at the Hampden restoration?

Yup, LE-C on one side and DX-C on the other. NX611 carries both 630 Sqn. (LE) and 57 Sqn. (DX) codes in honor of the two squadrons operating out of East Kirkby in WWII.

Re: East Kirkby Lancaster

Why won't the CAA let her fly?

I just wonder what would happen if one of these fast taxi runs becomes a little to fast, and we get some daylight underneath the tires. - oops.
