Re: USAFM restoration shop

I also think that the diecast would sell well for the museum. What is really cool is that there are diecast planes made of some of the exact aircraft in the collection, such as the Memphis Belle, P-47, and B-29 Bockscar.

I can take umbrage, I can take the cake, I can take the A-Train, I can take two and call me in the morning, but I cannot take this sitting down. Now, if you'll excuse me, I'm going to take five.

Re: USAFM restoration shop

Even if they were only selling the 1/144 stuff they could probably move it fairly easy. Another missed opportunity I guess....

I agree if they make something in 1/72 that's on display in Dayton I try to buy it (only missing the mossie and the newly repainted P-47 ) But imagine what corgi could do with that if they sold those at the museum..I'm sure that most people that have an a/c that stands out in thier mind that they saw while there would probably buy it in diecast

Re: USAFM restoration shop

I woul, and work at the place. I would buy diecast of aircraft I saw at a museum that I was visiting. The way that I look at it, not only am I adding to my collection, but it is also a keepsake from the trip.

Aberdeen proving grounds north of Baltimore has WWII armor on display. They also have Dragon 1/72 diecast in their gift shop. Not sure how well they sell.

Re: USAFM restoration shop

The Museum of Flight in Seattle deals quite a bit in some of the better diecast lines, but I suspect most museums look at it as too much of a specialty product that will collect dust and with which they can't compete against online retailers, so they gravitate towards glossy publications and "astronaut ice cream" (i.e. standard tourist fare).

I can agree with that to some extent but on the other hand I don't mind paying a couple extra bucks to get one as a keepsake from a museum and if you're my position and the only option of buying these things is online and you're only after a single item it still might be cheaper after you figure in shipping.

Re: USAFM restoration shop

I was just thinking about this very subject. There are several worthy subjects at the Hill AFB Museum for diecast, and I was wondering if any museums had commissioned special pieces reflecting aircraft in their collection before.

The local museum carries a lot of plastic model inventory, which hardly moves at all, except for when one of the volunteers wants to build a new plane. Personally, I would rather have a model depicting something I just saw than a generic plastic F-16 with Thunderbird markings or Astronaut Ice Cream.

But then again, maybe I'm just weird.

Yeah, you're weird. Astronaut ice cream is awesome!

Re: USAFM restoration shop

I think that you are correct. I know that if I go to an air museum, and they have something like a diecast of one of the aircraft in their collection, I will e more likely to get it. It serves as an addition to your collection, as well as a keepsake from the trip. I try to do that from each air museum I visit.
