Chicago O'Hare Intl Airport Wildcat

I got a chance to see this again over the holiday. It's kind of a pain in the butt to find, but well worth it if you have a little time to kill. They have a nice write up on Butch along with a little display.

Hey it looks like they took really great care of that old Wildcat.
I have never seen that one at O'Hare...What part of the airport terminal is it at ?
Great pictures too.

Very nice, if I'm ever there, I'll have to look it up. Thanks for sharing!

Great photos Waltz;

That plane has a great history, it is an F4F-3 fished out of Lake Michigan

John Lundstrom wrote a fine biography on O'Hare, and here is the Wikipedia write up on him, illustrated with numerous photos.

Very cool bud. There is also an SBD in Midway. What airplanes are kept at Miegs? Oh that is right none, because the mayor sucks.

That is cool - I haven't been to Chicago in years. I'd like to echo the request for the location of this exhibit...

Re: Chicago O'Hare Intl Airport Wildcat

That is a fantastic set up they have. I take it this is painted as O'Hare's plane? Or is it just painted as a WWII Wildcat from the same group?

I believe that is the markings of his Wildcat, but I also think that he flew one with a different number on it on a few missions.

Re: Chicago O'Hare Intl Airport Wildcat

My one and only trip to O'Hare Airport was a couple of years ago and was a horrible flying experience - arrived mid-afternoon, flight delayed until cancelled late in the evening, stuck overnight in Chicago and waiting until midday next day to fly out. But, I ran into this astounding site when I was wandering the airport on the 2nd morning. I just turned the corner and there was a flippin' Wildcat! It was quite a surprise, I tell you what. The F4 Wilcat is a rather stubby little plane up close in person.

I remember its in an odd little corner of the airport - like over by book vendors and such, I think.
