Re: Chicago O'Hare Intl Airport Wildcat

That is a fantastic set up they have. I take it this is painted as O'Hare's plane? Or is it just painted as a WWII Wildcat from the same group?

This is a good question, and one that I had fun researching.

O'hare normally flew in F-3 of VF-3. However, due to USN deck spotting practices in 1941-42, pilots didn't always fly the plane they were assigned to. On the day that Butch O'hare shot down 5 Bettys (Feb 20, 1942), he was actually flying F-15, assigned to Lt jg Rolla S. Lemmon. (All info from "The First Team".)

I think it is a nice touch that they painted the F4F in the colors of the plane he flew to victory.

Re: Chicago O'Hare Intl Airport Wildcat

Honestly, the only thing I remember if you are there at the airport, head towards the USO signs and the kids museum/play area. signs for those are off of the two main terminals. once you find that keep going and it's right around the corner. i actually asked one of the information people at a desk. there was an older gentleman and a younger girl. guess who knew exactly where and WHAT it was?!?!

The U.S.O. (United Service Organizations)is temporarily located in Terminal 2, Lower/Baggage Level, near Vestibule 2-A as of 2007. The Butch O'Hare plane exhibit is located in terminal two aswell.

Re: Chicago O'Hare Intl Airport Wildcat

That is so sweet. Thanks for posting.
Last time I flew to Chicago I ended up in Detroit, waited 4 hours in line for airline to get us hotel rooms and next day ended up in London Ontario. Never did make that Trade Show I was supposed to be going to.
