Best Museums in L.A.?

I'm going to be in L.A. for a few days next week, and wonder if anyone knows a good armor or aviation museum in the greater area? I probably will only have an afternoon or so, so if there is a really good one, I don't want to miss it.

Planes of Fame at Chino is not too far away and its an amazing place. I spent a full day there and didnt see everything. I cannot remember exactly but I think it was maybe an hours drive from LA.

Re: Best Museums in L.A.?

Jim's suggestion is the best in the LA area. Also just down I-15 is the March AFB Air Museum. It has some nice displays from WW1 and a lot of jets outside the hanger. And if you get adventurous there is the San Diego Aerospace Museum in Balboa park also a couple of other museums too, including a great model train museum..

Agree you have got to see this place...It's great place to go.
You will have a blast there.
Just head south on I-5 from LA and you be there in no time.

Re: Best Museums in L.A.?

You absolutely must visit the Ripley's Believe It or Not Museum while you're there. They have a pair of Jim's undy-drawers on display that he didn't remove for 41 years - for anything!...

(that in itself worth the price of admission)...

Another vote for Chino from me- well worth the drive.

If you go to San Diego you can also call on USS Midway which has several jets on her deck.

Re: Best Museums in L.A.?

As a member of the museum, I would have to say the Planes of Fame is your best bet.

I can take umbrage, I can take the cake, I can take the A-Train, I can take two and call me in the morning, but I cannot take this sitting down. Now, if you'll excuse me, I'm going to take five.

Re: Best Museums in L.A.?

Even closer than Planes of Fame, (although I do agree, get there!! as well as YANKS which is right next door) is the CAF wing at Camarillo airport. My wife is from about 15 minutes from there so I hit it up every time we go visit her family. Last time i was there they had an I-16 in, along with a Martlet (Wildcat), Hellcat, Bearcat, the PBJ rebuild, and their C-46 China Doll. There's a ton of T-28's flying in and out of that airport, and some other things too......they have a nice little collection there. check it out. and i highly recommend stopping in the airport cafe there, it's a nice little place that you can eat outside and just be next to the airport.
