Re: Restored Bf-109G6 unveiled at a Museum

Bear with me - I haven't translated in a while...

It is a legend of the air. Famous Fighter Aces such as Hans Joachim Marseille, Erich “Bubi” Hartmanhn, Walter Nowotny Heinz Bär and many others flew this mount to fame. Next to the Focke Wulf FW190, it composed the back bone of the fighter forces of the german Luftwaffe during the Second World War. I’m talking about the Messerschmitt Bf (Me) 109. Approximately 35,000 airframes were manufacturered. It is therefore the most manufactured military aircraft in the world, to this point. Almost 30% of all Bf 109s were assembled in the Vienna-Neustadt Aircraft Works. Today, only a handful of airworthy examples still exist. A dozen are in museums. In Austria, up to this point, there were no viewable examples of this air classics.

That has changed. The Me 109 has returned to its birthplace. Thanks to the “Aviaticum” air museum, founded by ‘Mag.Cunia’, at the Vienna Neustadt East airport, a beautifully restored Messerschmitt Me 109 G6 is on display. From the stick, to the engined, to the flare pistol of the flight leader, original parts were used in the restoration.

On November 10th, 2006, the presentation took place. Engineer Steiner and his grandchildren unveiled the aircraft to assembled guests, including fighter veterans of the Second World War.

The Plane is unveiled…

The star of the evening basks in the glow of its public.

Engineer Kurt Steiner, the spiritual father of the project and the creator of this machine…

The restoration of this machine took nearly 20 years!!. The amount of time and work put into this project by Engineer Kurt Steiner is amazing. It is difficult to imagine that the fighter isn’t flight worthy. To the contrary, it is easy to imagine the Daimler-Benz motor roaring to life, and the plane rolling out of the display hall under its own power.

The engine of the 109.

The Cockpit. Note the bullet-proof glass that protects the head of the pilot.

The Cockpit, narrow and restored with original parts.

This Me 109 G6 was assembled out of parts of multiple Messerschmitts. The main components (fuselage and flaps) were donated by a Bf 109 G-14/AS of the 4th staffel of JG53, that was shot down during Operation “Baseplate” on 1 January 1945.

The pilot, Unteroffizier (Sergeant) Herbert Maxis effected a successful emergency landing, but was shot by allied soldiers after vacating the wreck.

In 1987, the wreck was purchased, and was restored with parts from other Me 109s, including a G-6 from 1942.

In remembrance of Unteroffizier Maxis, this plane wears the colors she wore in combat on 1 January 1945 as a G14/AS.

The Me 109 G6 wears the paint of the G14/AS that was shot down on 1 January 1945, in remembrance of the pilot.

The Me 109 G6 “White 13” is on display at “Aviaticum”. It joins the other pieces of Engineer Steiner’s assembled collection.

Die Me 109 G6 "Weiße 13" ist bis auf weiteres im "Aviaticum" zu besichtigen. Weiters hat Herr Ing. Steiner

Hounded like a movie star, the Me 109 G6, the new crown jewel of “Aviaticum”.
