Mustangs and Hurricanes

Hey Guys,

I finished up my display this weekend. I have all 6 Model Power Mustangs now.

Anyone know about the possible mistakes/errors on the P51 Mustang with the red nose on the left of the first photo below? It has the landing gear from another plane on the bottom and I think the Air Force symbol on the underside of the wing is printed on the wrong wing!

I also have the 3 Hawker Hurricanes.

Very nice aircraft models! Pictures are below. Enjoy!!

Re: Mustangs and Hurricanes

Looks very nice. The lights are an added effect.

You'll have to get more cases, for there are more models to come.

Not sure whether you'd want me to do this, Hawk ? But all 3 Hurricanes have 'errors'

1st, the (in wartime) Duxford-based Canadian 242 Squadron Hurricane (with 'LE' fuselage codes).........

They were never equipped with the wacking great (40mm) wing-gondola cannon.

Neither was the one next to it, in desert colours (which is in reality a Malta-based 8 x .303 mg Hurricane), which like the Russian/Murmansk-based 151 wing Hurricane (next to that)..... carries totally incorrect 'Type-A.1' upper-wing roundels (with the yellow surround & white inner.
They should ALL look the same as the 1st one's upper wing roundels (Type 'B' = which are correct).

The only (operational) Hurricanes to carry the large Vickers 40mm 'Tank-buster' cannons, were No.6 Squadron (with 'JV' fuselage codes) which operated in the Western-Desert in an identical sand/stone colour-scheme.

No.6 Squadron RAF thereafter adopted a Red 'canopener' on a cobalt-blue background as their (distinctive) Squadron-badge.

They were worn even on the tails of their 'Jaguar' GR's until the Squadron disbanded at Coningsby last summer ('07).

Interesting display technique you got there guy !!!!!!!!!!!

Right or Wrong? Correct or Incorrect?

Last edited by duxford : 04-01-2008 at 04:58 AM. Reason: correction
That was really a good explanation of the markings on the Model Power Hurricanes. I have similar problems, though not with Model Power.

I think that Model Power enthusiasts (like Hawk and me) know what to expect: it is not always correct. But I do not know why. Ever since I have been collecting, I discover a wrong plane with bad markings--or a right plane with wrong markings. I was able to have a nice discussion with Terrell Clements about Flying Tiger markings. And how we cannot be so sure.

I have some models that are not exact. In fact, the Old Red Nose Mustang is supposed to be Red Dog XII, but isn't marked as so.

And it is with Witty and Corgi and with others. So, I buy the airplane, knowing it should be what the company says (since they are supposed to have done reearch). And I find an error. But, gee, that plane looks just too neat.

Right now I am waiting for an answer to my Witty Silver Spitfire: Something is not right with the Dutch marking--or with Witty.

I have a Witty Spitfire coming, silver, from the 31st Fighter Group. I cannot find a picture of a silver Spitfire in all of my books. BUT THAT MODEL SURE IS PURTY.

This is what makes it all so very interesting: finding out. I may be wrong, but I'm not far from it.

I appreciate the information. I really like learning about these aircraft. I was actually hoping these errors would increase their value down the road, but I guess not.

Looks like they are just models that the manufacturer decided to repaint and re-release to make some more $$.

Thanks for the info though!!

Re: Mustangs and Hurricanes

Hawk,

On the 1st release of the Me-109 and Me-262, they had swazee's on them, and later they were produced without them. Those 1st release's were demanding a pretty penny at the time. I spoke with the guy at Model Power when they 1st came out, and they were fetching close to 100.00 based on his input. I have both without, but have seen them in Hobby Town a year back with the marking, however they did not come in the box, but were enclosed in the plastic case.

Nice Display of your fighters !

Regards,
Mike

Re: Mustangs and Hurricanes

HunHunter, You are right.

I had both the Bf-109 and the Me-262 from the UK, both with the swastika. Both were part of the Del Prado subscription series: No Model Power box, but sealed in the same plastic insides.

Hawk now has the Bf-109; I still have the Me-262 for him when he calls for it.
