Yea it's dead gorgeous(i need to get out more).
It's pretty expensive the equivalent Gato class 1/72 from Revell cost about US$76.
But i want something big....so i'll consider it. Too bad Christmas is a loong way to go

Re: Rust effect on WWII Submarine how?

The DEAREST & most expensive model I've EVER bought was

an Italian kit of a mid-late Mk.VII U-boat, in 1/72nd scale.

It has a Resin Hull & die-cast & photo-etched detailing kit

(sorry, the name of the manufacturer escapes me - I'll post the man'f name later).

It was £ 225 new, but the box was a bit squashed, & they were asking a clearance price ....... £ 160.

Two visits, an hour later, & after MUCH bartering, I left the nautical shop in Bluewater, Kent (Europe's largest shopping mall) with this absolute MONSTER of a kit, for which I'd paid £ 100.

It's made by Amati ....... & apparently retails at around $ 300 U.S.Dollars.

Upon release, it won "Model of the Year" award "1996 International Toy-Fair"

Heck i could buy an airline ticket to go to somewhere pretty far with that money. It takes too long for me to starve myself. Amati is a sure no go.

Could you post pictures of your built model? I'm sure it's terrific.

It IS terrific, BUT.....
Ha !!! It's STILL sitting in it's (squashed) box, un-made, in a bedroom, 6 miles away !!!!!!!! (unless Mum's squirreled it away in a shed ??? ).

I've got a VAST kit collection (mainly 1/48th a/c.....Tamiya, Hasegawa, Eduard, Dragon, Revell, etc) stored at my folks house - there's two of them (elderly) & four of us (two teenagers) living here, with less space.

I have REGULAR blazing-rows with the 'old Dragon'/wife, about my 'collections' & hobbies - re; storage - kits, die-cast & numerous quality guitars (Gibson L.P./4 x U.S. Strat's/Jazz Basses etc)
- hence why the U-boat is at Parents.

I'd already figured I'd need the patience of a saint, to bring out the best in it, ESPECIALLY at THAT money.

It's only since we moved fairly recently, that I've got into die-cast - no hassle/glue/spray-paint/decalling/varnishing & weathering - " just straight out the box ".

At least I'd built up the kit collection whilst in London, buying some kits at silly cheap prices........

Since moving 130 miles North, the kit buying dried up & the die-cast (lazy-ness) started, as kits are harder to come by round here (without paying a SILLY high R.R.P).

Haha yea US$300 is fortune to spend on a unfinished kit. Perhaps you could pay up somebody's to finish it?

Now I'm seriously considering to buy Revell's 1/72 VIIC. It costs about US$55.00 according to someone over in the States. Now i just need to estimate the price by adding up to 50% of that price(I envy you guys). Will go to a local hobbyshop this weekend. I hope it's still there. Saw it abt 2 yrs ago . That was the only one.

Re: Rust effect on WWII Submarine how?

Beautiful effect Skunky. As the original was built in my home town. It still saddens me to see such a majestic ship reposing at the bottom of the Atlantic, hulked out in time and tragedy. The shipyard who built her is as the Titanic, no more. The city of Belfast sank with it when it went down and its memory has been passed on to to those. Who like my self. Never witnessed the despair of the time. I've watched the movie so many times, still hoping it will turn out differently...it never does.

Many thanks Skunky. I love that light effect, its very spooky or atmospheric would be a better word.

r.k. Re;the emboldened quote........

There are two chances of THAT happening - Bob Hope & No Hope !!!!!!

Stocked up on the kits when the going was smooth & pickings were dead easy.... (like Tamiya Fw.190-D.9's for a 'fiver' each (= £ 5) + Tamiya 1/48th Mosquito's & Beaufighter's were a 'tenner' (= £ 10).

One day I'll get 'real-old', maybe infirm..... & then it'll all make sense (& I'll make 'em up).

If I didn't get an 'ear-bashing', I'd love to pick up the Revell 1/72 version (U-boat).

Better to make mistakes on a £.30 kit, than a £.225 kit.

From your perspective, you'll be better off, if you can pick up a Revell 1/72nd U-boat from a kit-fair, or I.P.M.S. show - if there's one comin up, near you ?
The prices should be better, or well below your local store's R.R.P.

We need a State-side forum member, like hworth18, or no4mkit, to try & advise you in the right direction, regarding U.S. & Canadian I.P.M.S. shows.
(I'm assuming you may attend one of those, as opposed to Europe ????)

Generally speaking, folks who attend these shows (behind the display tables) often get shot of un-wanted kits or P/x's, by selling them off 'under the table', so to speak - happens both sides of the Atlantic.
You'll come across bargains, provided you've got a keen eye.......

I almost got lynched at one show, one guy selling off Dragon Tri-master kits, so I picked up a rare 'Rammjager '190 & others (similar) for a pittance.

One thing that crossed my mind, is that although American kits used to be easily available over here - Revell in particular have had a MASSIVE upsurge in the quantity of their German a/c offerings over the last ten years (or so).

That's cause, despite Revell U.S. being the 'Parent' company......

Revell A.G. (Germany/Europe) have been releasing newer tooling kits, such as the Dornier 217.E-5 & Arado 234's (amongst others) in relatively short runs - & I assume that those offerings MAY sell better in Europe, than in the U.S.

I would bet my 'bottom-dollar' that the 1/72nd Revell U-boat is (probably) far more easily available over here,
than it is to certain area's of the U.S. - or MOST CERTAINLY in your part of the World ???????
