| Paint problems While on vacation I thought I would treat myself to building a plastic model kit (a rarity for me). I purchased some paint at the hobby shop and found two colors, in particular, that are driving me insane! ![]() ![]() Is there a trick to applying colors such as white and yellow to the model without it becoming an exercise in frustration and patience? I mean, I put five coats of yellow on and the color of the plastic STILL shows through! White isn't any better. The plastic was prepped (washed/rinsed) before painting. I don't have this problem with the other paints, just these two. You can see why I prefer to collect die cast. ![]() | |||||||||||||

| Re: Paint problems You need to first apply a base coat of gray primer or you'll be slappin' the entire jar on and the color of the plastic will still shine through. Yellow was always my least favorite color to work with when I was building.. | |||||||||||||

Agreed.. You can find gray or white primer (I use Tamiya white primer) and use that to base coat the model so the darker plastic doesn't show thru..

| Re: Paint problems
Very much true...Always put on a primer coat before painting. If you want a bright Yellow use the White Tamiya primer it's the best one IMHO but others will work too. JP

| Re: Paint problems Thanks for the info guys! I wished I had asked when the problem was first noticed. I had purchased an old Airfix RAF Rescue Launch and by now the many layered coats of yellow paint alone would sink it! So would you primer the entire model or just the parts with the "difficult" paint colors? As mentioned the other paints don't appear to exhibit any of the problems of the white and yellow. ![]() | |||||||||||||

| Re: Paint problems I would primer the entire model. In the past i had to do a Bluenoser in OD and i primered the whole model (grey) Taped up the area that was to be OD and sprayed the Blue on the P-51B's nose area. Then i taped up the blue area and sprayed the OD on the rest of the Mustang. That way it would be more level looking...One side of the paint won't be higher then the other side. Air brush would do a better job then a spray can. JP | |||||||||||||

| Re: Paint problems
Since I paint in my dining room, I use acrylic paints, but I usually primer all the parts while they are still on the sprue (I spray the primer in my garage to avoid getting fumes inside)

| Re: Paint problems Thanks again for your help. I need a "Model Painting for Dummies" book. I'll do my best using what you have told me to save the model currently under construction (destruction?), but will apply your suggestions to any future models I undertake. ![]() | |||||||||||||
