Matchbox value assessment..

I have a customer that has asked me the general value of his Matchbox Platinum Edition P-51D Mustang "Bunnie". Now I'm familiar with the model and it's subject, but not it's value. We never sold these and I don't know what the demand is now that they're discontinued.

Do you?

Talking Re: Matchbox value assessment..

Well, I have seen the Platinum version selling in the ball park of $59.00 to $75.00 USD. Understand that this is for a MIB Platinum version not the regular release of Bunny. Both items are identical with the exception of the packaging and certificate of authenticity which makes the Platinum version more collectible. I hope this info helps!

Yup, I could have had that...............

Re: Matchbox value assessment..

I was watching one this past week on Ebay. I was suprised at how low it went. I already deleted it from my watch list. But I think it went for between $12 and $15 (plus shipping). Non Platinium model.

From what I remember - I don't think the Platinium models were going for much (if any) higher than the regular models - when these appeared more regularly on Ebay.

Someone please correct me if my memory is wrong.

Re: Matchbox value assessment..

opinions differ here's mine:
Matchbox platinums were almost identical to the regular releases. On the platinums there was only a shallow slot holding the plane upright on the stand. This allowed many of the platinums to fall off the stands and break. New the platinms cost 3-4 times as much as the regulars. Being there were more regular releases with the new improved slot and stand guys mostly dropped the platinums and they became obscure. The price of the platinums tanked for a good while. Now that all Matchboxes are finished the prices are all over the scale for both the regulars and the platinums. The P-51D Bunnie seemed to be one of the more difficult to find models while not impossible it's subject matter definitely contributed. I had 2 and sold both for a fairly good price(profit). When Corgi offered their polished version of the same and then 2 other Tuskegee's I lost interest in having 2 of the same. While I like the polished corgi and the limited part is cool the MB IMHO is a superior model. I regret selling mine now. If I were looking to sell my MB Bunnie I would hope to get in the $30-40 range. I think closer to $30 is more realistic as the model has been eclipsed by the better known and more collectable Corgi. I truly believe all MB planes will be very collectable classic 172 planes for many more years to come despite newer offerings. They have extremely nice details,no fiddly bits, and display beatifully. IMHO MB planes now should demand a price over $20 each. The later releases (non WW1) seem to be less popular and therefore demand a lower price.

Re: Matchbox value assessment..

What's the "value?"

"Regular" version. Had been displayed. (Auction ended 8/25.)

(Not trying to be a smart a$$ here.) Isn't the answer to that question, always - "What ever you can get someone to pay for it."

Smile Re: Matchbox value assessment..

I have seen the model to which you refer going for as much as 99.00 US. I have seen non-platinum MB P-38's go from 50-100 US pretty regulalry (not that they are for sale very often.) I saw an ad for a Platinum P-38 quoting a price of 495.00 US. I don't know if this was a reaslistic price, or some seriously wishful thinking! I have also seen some talk about the MB FW190's being desireable items..saw one one on ebay for 52.95 US...Spitfires, too, other than the MkIIA, I have seen advertised from 19.99 - 95.00.

The two Fw-190s are one of the finest models done by MB and I concur with the 'desirability factor' on those. Welcome to the forum, noraebong.

Re: Matchbox value assessment..

Thanks for the welcome. Matchbox Collectibles introduced me to the pleasure (my wife would use the word "addiction"!!) of collecting die cast model aircraft. I am a relative neophyte to this world, and the history thereof, so please forgive any errors I may make in descriptions! I am especially interested in 1:72 WW2 models, and some of the first generation jets. I was dismayed to learn of the demise of the Matchbox series, as they seemed to me to represent good bang for the buck. I don't know if it is just a case of beauty being in the eye of the beholder, but I have been hard pressed to find models that have similar visual appeal to the Matchbox ones I possess. If anyone can recommend some worthy substitutes, I'd appreciate it greatly!

I particularly like the plain green A6M5; the mottled PRC MIG 15 and of course the black nosed Fw190. Oh yes. And Gabreski's (perhaps I have the wrong ace) P-47..the camouflaged one with the red ring around the cowling..definitely one of my favourites.
One other question. I have both (non-Platinum ) P-38's. How do the Corgi models compare?

Cheers

Re: Matchbox value assessment..

Who am I to say, but I feel the MB P-38's are better in more ways than Corgi's. Yes they have no wheels and screw holes, but otherwise they are superior. I am giving my honest opinion. I wish I still had mine.
