Re: What are the rarest matchbox collectibles?

Top pick would have to go to the Platinum Edition Olds P-38. Only a few were made available on evilBay. There may have been quite a few standard release Olds' P-38s, but only a handful of the Platinum jobbies.

Re: What are the rarest matchbox collectibles?

My guesses are the 2 P-38's ,Fw-190 Red 13(Heinz Bar's), Grey Bf-109, Silver F-100. AVG P-40, Pappy Boyington's F4U Corsair, and Red Nose Flying Tiger P-40(Robert Scott's). The P-38's are the hottest sellers and of all 30 something planes these go for the most. I have 11 of these planes about to go on E-bay but none are on the aforementioned list. I am selling some of the ones in the top list on e-bay currently better hurry though seller name louielvira. Matchbox planes are spectacular and acurrate. I have owned two complete sets of these and the Canadian releases. I am keeping all of my P-51's except the Tuskegee and one P-47 and have no plans to part with them as I have yet to find ones that are better. Dragon's versions are nice but still MB has it's finer points in some ways. Oh, and I am also keeping ALL of my Matchbox bi-planes as they are smokin hot renditions of classic early war planes.

Re: What are the rarest matchbox collectibles?

While the Lightnings are the most sought after as Louie says, I don't think there are any less of them than any others. The same goes for the Bf 109 from the third edition. There are probably just as many of them as of the Old Crow P-51. It's just that the subject matter, Eric Hartmann's plane, is quite tempting to most collectors which would explain why you can't find it cheaply now.

I think there were less of the later series, so they might be a little more rare. They certainly weren't offered in as many outlets as the earlier releases. The Olds Platinum edition like PH-LKK said, is in a class of its own and would have to be considered the rarest.

Agree on the silver F-100. The gray Bf 109 is somewhat hard to find but not the rarest, imho. The Canadian releases Heinz Barr Fw 190 & the sand camo Bf 109 was even found at Tuesday Morning one day by me!
