I think you hit the nail on the head B6...the wrong color has been depicted for so long that it is very hard for many to accept! The correct glossy pale olive paint did weather to a much lighter matte finish shade but not to the matte light gray that is so often represented.

I just finished reading an article in the latest Flight Journal special issue, WWII Air Combat. In the article called "First Blood," Pacific ace Jim Swett details a battle he had with a formation of Japanese Aichi D3-A "Val" dive bombers. Detailing his attack on a formation of Vals, he describes them as being "painted in a dirty olive drab" color.

I love reading or hearing about anecdotes like this.
