Re: Altaya Biplanes

Thanks, I am probably going to have a try with the CR42 too...

I had also modified and repainted IXO's awful MS406, but not being too talented the result wasn't very convincing...

So I stick to models, wich don't require too much DIY

I just saw some better pictures of the Fiat CR 42 on ebay (macemundi) so be careful on this one also. While a top view looks OK, it appears that the guys who painted the sides and especially, the wing supports just sloped the paint up and down in their mad rush to finish as quickly as possible. While I plan to repaint all of these planes once I obtain them, if you don't go in for that, than you may wish to hold back.

Re: Altaya Biplanes

Hi Epapazian...I tried to find Cristiantg's ebay store but couldn't, although I must admit that I am a complete novice when it comes to e-bay. Do know whether he is still a seller? I have also been trying to liaise with WW2DiecastModels to organise a bulk order of WW1 biplanes. However, it has been difficult to say the least.
Cheers from Oz

Hi: Cristian and Macemundi are still in business. While both sell IXO models, as do a number of others, these two also specialize in the Altaya biplanes and Cristian has also sold the old Atlas 1:100 fighter plane and 1:144 bomber series. As I understand it, he will offer the new 1:144 Altaya bombers which look very interesting in terms of better quality plus a lot of unusual planes being included. From time to time both of these sellers disappear from view on ebay, I presume to restock. I usually check the ebay" diecast toy vehicles--aircraft" listings every day or so and search for an I-15, Fiat CR-42 or HS-123. When one of these pops up it's usually being offered by one or both of these sellers. While some of the planes are presented with a" buy it now" option, at the outset the sellers prefer the auction route since this earns them more money. Eventually, you can obtain most of these planes at a set price. My guess on the biplanes is about $25-30 plus s&h. Don't forget my earlier cautions regarding the quality of the biplane series---it's pretty poor. I buy those I want knowing they must be fixed and, often, repainted from top to bottom.

Having purchased many IXOs and Atlas planes as well as one of the new Altaya 1:144 scale bombers ( the B-17G ), I agree with you on the Altaya biplanes. This is the worst of the promotional series, although I did manage after considerable sanding, bending, adding, painting, etc. to come up with a passable Curtiss Hawk III and a Japanese "Pete" sea plane. Since there is little chance of anyone else doing such planes in the foreseeable future, the effort was worthwhile. If you aren't into doing major repairs, however, the biplanes are definitely something to stay away from. On the other hand, the new Altaya bomber series looks promising, albeit still a bit risky for perfectionist minded collectors.

Angry Re: Altaya Boeing PT-17

This collection of biplanes is distributed by Planeta DeAgostini, not by Altaya. I guess we will need a new heading on the Forum.... There will be lots to talk about There are a Sopwith Triplane, SE 5A, Sopwith Pup and what looks like a 1 1/2 Struter also coming

As has been pointed out elsewhere on this forum, the only slight problem with this apparently attractive selection of models is that they are utter crap. Seriously, the worst die-cast you've ever seen, outside of the Coke-cans aircraft made by Vietnamese street-kids. I made the mistake of buying the Hs-123, and had to hide it away in shame, it was so shite
