So, what is the the opinion of the Forum members on Internet Retailers "lifting" somebody else's pictures for their own business use?

Well, it appears to be a clear copyright violation. Illegal and also (IMHO) unethical.

Send them a "cease and desist" letter by certified mail.

Frankly, it makes me less likely to use them as a source for my hobby.

I think that it is alright ONLY if the picture owner gave his aproval.
I dont think this is the case.
a while ago I used some of tricatus's pictures for a sale on ebay but I asked the photographer's permission first and mentioned his website on my listing so it was clear I was not the owner of the picture.
