Re: Ixo P-40 ?

Yeah, that does look a tad dark especially for 1/72, though olive drab was known to go brownish as it faded. It would even look like a tan when it got super faded, though that looks kinda dark for fading olive drab.

Agreed. I've got a lighter shade of brownish O.D. that I'm going to use and the neutral gray I've got is lighter than this, but not really "light". Should look good. I'm starting tomorrow. I want this model to be really good so I'll be taking my time.

P-40 Variants

I forgot to mention, for those not familiar with this modeller's site, some great infomation.

Try this for size. Easy to read, with some great pictures--monthly.

Enjoy.

So no opinions on the position of the stabs?

Re: Ixo P-40 ?

Here is a link to picture of what appears to be a P-40N. In this pic also, the horizontal stabs are farther forward than on previous models - just like the IXO model.

While they look a little odd b-huj, my deeper research seems to support that they are in the correct location on the IXO P-40N. The markings are accurate except for the noted shade of the basic coloration which is way too dark.

Re: Ixo P-40 ?

I think that overall it is a cool looking model.

I can take umbrage, I can take the cake, I can take the A-Train, I can take two and call me in the morning, but I cannot take this sitting down. Now, if you'll excuse me, I'm going to take five.

I have also searched for pictures of preserved -N or original shots and IXO seems to have got it spot-on! I am now happier with my model.

Here it is!

Here is my IXO P-40N remodel. It was a lot of fun and the plane looks great next to my other P-40s. First a short review of the IXO model.

Pros: The model's dimensions and shape are accurate. The stabilizers are in the right spot. The original markings are correct. The decking behind the cockpit is correct as well. The landing gear is strong enough to support the model which is good as the model is heavy.

Cons: This is an IXO model - that means deep, blackened panel lines, missing details, and poorly fitting parts. The landing gear is all one piece - no spinning tires and very simple. There are no gear doors - at all! I had to make some for the tail wheel. The wheel wells and cockpit decking are not chromate green. As posted earlier in this thread, IMHO the colors are way too dark.

Model: P-40N-1, Pilot Officer Samuel Hammer, 90th FS/ 80th FG, Moran, India, 1944

Colors: Testor Modelmaster Olive Drab (FS 34087), Testor Flat Gray 1163, Testor Flat Green 1164, Testor Dullcoat spray

Decals: SuperScale Decal No. 72-862
