The Chinese did operate the N type, this also means the N type was not a Flying Tiger. This topic was dealt with on the old forum by someone. Yes, it has a shark's mouth, no, it's not an AVG plane. I am not 100% sure about the accuracy of the "boss's hoss" titles on a Chinese Air Force plane...probably it was sth in Chinese instead, but the rest of the livery is 99% accurate.

One thing: does anyone else think the horizontal stabilisers are placed a bit too far ahead? the stabs have this "indentation" precisely for the rudder to work w/o obstruction, but so far ahead, it is not even necessary!

Re: Ixo P-40 ?

The 49th Fighter group is one of my favorites, which plane do you plan on making?

I have just received a set of Super Scale decals that I ordered from Squadron. The plane I'm going to "try" to do is a P-40N-1 flown by Samuel Hammer of the 90th FS/80th FG, Moran, India, 1944.

These decals look pretty good. The only thing I wasn't expecting is that the national insignia are the blue circle with only the white bars - no blue border. I'm not too sure about this, so I'll have to trust that the decal maker did their homework and got it right. I'll post pics as soon as I finish.

Boss's Hoss

Yes, we've had this discussion.

I like my model. It is a special marking, and I am not the specialist on stabilizers.

Anyhow, it belongs to LTC William N. Reed, CO of the Chinese-American Combat Wing.

Look for P-40 Warhawk Aces of the CBI, Osprey #35. Some great pictures of the plane.

Re: Ixo P-40 ?

Nice picture. It's nice to know the markings are accurate. The model's gray underside is still too dark. Should be a lighter neutral gray. Got enough "shark mouth" P-40s so I'm still going to repaint one. I've got another one that I'll leave alone until I decide what to do with it.

I haven't seen this plane in person, but you'd be supprised just how dark U.S. WWII neutral gray actually was. When fresh it was surprisingly dark.

Re: Ixo P-40 ?

I know, but this gray is atleast two shades removed from black. I'm pretty good with color (artist who mixes his on paints you know) and this one just looks way off.

I'm sure you're right. I haven't seen it in person. It just drives me nuts....most companies make the "Neutral Gray" waaaaay too light. It was very close to Federal Standard FS-595 36173 which is pretty dark. Some people use 36270 which is a little light and blue but is ok for 1/72.

Re: Ixo P-40 ?

Here's a couple of quick pics I just took. Used a flash and the model still looks dark.

Underside - see how dark this is!

Even the top is a deep brownish - OD.
