Question Cunningham F-4J black vs grey?

This may have been asked before, so my apologies, but on the Hobby Master prototype for the Cunningham F-4J, dark grey paint s used on the upper air intakes. BBI's 1/32 VF-84 Jolly Rogers F-4J also used dark grey paint. But on Hobby Master's actual release, black paint was substituted for the dark grey.

Any explanation for the paint switch?

ZED550:

So Hobby Master's prototype grey paint was incorrect?

This has been discussed in the past-- Check out posts 46 through 49 of this string:

I believe the conclusion was that the black is probably right.
