Fairey Swordfish?

I am thinking that a Fairey Swordfish would make for a great model in 1/48 scale, or even better yet--in 1/32 scale!! Corgi has already done the Swordfish in 1/72 and it is one of their more credible efforts. However, a larger scale Swordfish would be most welcome. In fact, a 1/32 scale Swordfish would be nothing short of spectacular!!

What do the rest of you think of a larger scale Swordfish?

Re: Fairey Swordfish?

Fairey Swordfish or Fairey Albacore would make neat looking 1/48th scale diecast models.

Brewster Buffalo, Hawk 75A, Fokker D.XXI, Polikarpov I-16, Fiat G.50, Macchi C. 200, PZL P.11c, Fieseler Fi 156 Storch ,,,, now those are real planes.

Re: Fairey Swordfish?

I don't usually collect aircraft in 1:48, but I will make an exception for the Swordfish if someone does it in that scale.

Sorry kb I missed this thread a few weeks ago.

I am 100% with you, I can not believe this thread got so few comments. I have been saying that a 1:48 Swordfish would be an amazing model to make. For a long time I thought that I was wishing in vain : Most companies would not bother with a plane so big, and the biplane / rigging side of it would also put many companies off. But now I believe that a company like HM might do it one day. They seem to have mastered the rigging OK in their 1:48 F3F so they could easily do it again. Most importanlty, HM is the type of brand that has the type of market outlook to come up with this product.

Corgi did it in 1:72 and made a fantastic job of it. Makes you wonder how nice this would be in 1:48 and by an even better brand.
You might have seen it already, but check this for an idea of how many nice models could be made of it :

Corgi Aviation Archive

William, if you are reading this, please keep the Swordfish in mind for a Future 1:48 release :
  • Many nice different colour schemes
  • Versions with floats or with wheels
  • Several historical missions to represent : The attack That crippled the Birmarck / night attack on the Italian Navy anchored at Tarento / attack on the Scharnhorst and Guinisneau when they crossed the channel to go back from France to Germany ( all five Swordfish lost, no survivors. They went in unescorted agains an air cover of 40+ Fw-190A. They never stood a chance... ), etc

I would go for this one in 1/48 .....It proved to the Japanese that this type of attack was possible at Taranto too bad the US navy did not take enough notice. .... and was incredibly successful considering its age and configuration.

In I.P.M.S. circles, the 1/48th Tamiya Swordfish went down a 'Storm' & sold like Ice-Cold beers on a Hot;90-F Day !!!!!!!!

Believe me........ a 1/48th Swordfish is PLENTY big enough

One of the big-regrets of my life, was walking into M.Z. Bluewater & seeing TWO (remaining) Tamiya 1/48th Floatplanes being 'knocked-out' at just £ 15 each (at the time, they were £ 42 retail !!!!)

The Brit' importer (Riko) were 'Going-under' at the time...... & some Tamiya kits were being (momentarily) knocked-out cheap.....

I had the cash (£ 30) for both........ but picked 'em up & then (stupidly) put them down again; saying to myself that I WON'T have paitience to do the Rigging........

Then, the Wife said...... "come on, you've got about a million un-built Tamiya-kits anyway = you DON'T need TWO more"

If I had a Poundfor EVERY time I've regretted that little 'Faux-pas', I'd have enough to buy the FULL 'Century-Wings' range.......

FROM SCRATCH !!!!!!!!!!! LOL

Here's some pix of what I missed-out on............

Have to think that the folks at HM would do a fine job on the Swordfish. Seeing that the Tamiya Swordfish currently goes between $75.00 and $84.00 (Before buying paint and other building needs), wonder if a Hobby Master version could end up being less than this kit. (After giving it some more thought, probably not less than kit, but at least you would not have to do the rigging by hand.)

That's the thing that seems to be "sticking the knife" into Companies like Tamiya, thesedays......

(Their) Over-priced & expensive 'plastic-kits' that (now) have DIRECT competition with well-made Die-cast models

... i.e. the "Goal-posts" have shifted

As an I.P.M.S. friend of mine remarked, earlier this month......"the emphasis is shifting AWAY from plastic-kits towards Die-cast, BIG-TIME"

"You can buy a well-made Hobbymaster for LESS than the price of a kit & paints & decals & brass-etched..."

As Cruv' says; by the time you've 'lashed-out' on an expensive-kit & THEN bought the (neccessary) paints & THEN the After-market decals (plus, various varnishes).....

The Diecast (by comparison) is (nowadays) well finished & ready to "Rock'n'Roll" straight out the Box !!!!!!!!!

Far less hassle..... (but, I guess, less personal reward).

I know my Hobbymaster Harvards can't be beaten for a meagre £ 10

Re: Fairey Swordfish?

I got kind of curious as to what it might run to make a 1/48th scale Swordfish kit. This what I figure would be needed to do a decent display model.

Kit $75.60 (Using stock decals)
Photo etch set $22.46
Paints and clear coat $25.80
Miscellaneous items $15.50

Total $139.36

Pretty much a price project even before any of the parts get put together. Did not include cost for puty filler or sandpaper which would be needed on this project too. Shoot it might just be realistic to think that someone like Hobby Master could put one out for less than would go into the cost of building one yourself.
