HM P-400 Review

Thankfully my HM shipment included the new P-400 (which helps to soothe the pain inflicted by the HM Huey I am sending back). This is really a nice model by Hobby Master that fits in nicely with my Pacific War collection. I paid $28.00 for it shipped and am very happy with it.

The Good News
  • Excellent paint scheme and markings which are identical to the real aircraft as illustrated in one of my books (The Illustrated Directory of Fighting Aircraft of WWII).
  • Contains a removable pilot figure.
  • Looks great "in flight" or sitting parked.
  • Can attach bomb, external fuel tank, or an air scoop* - but not on the stand.
The Bad News
  • Canopy "tabs" are clearly visible on the closed canopy.
  • Lots of "fiddly bits" to mess with when having the gear in the down position.
  • Cannot attach bomb or fuel tank when the stand is attached.
  • Gun ports in the nose are unpainted dents.
* The model has a removable air scoop (that's what it looks like) that attaches to the belly of the plane. I cannot find any pics of a P-400 so equipped (the illustration I mentioned above does not show it) and it cannot be in place when the bomb or external fuel tank is in place. So what the heck is it and why is it there if it isn't part of this aircraft?

All in all this is a terrific model that I do recommend if you have an interest in adding to your PTO collection.

Re: HM P-400 Review

Great review on the latest HM P-400. Not sure what the scoops are that you have mentioned, any chance of posting some pictures of them.

Re: HM P-400 Review

I also picked up this model so here are a few pics to tide you over. You can see the underside with and without the mysterious scoop. The plane comes with up and down u/c and a fuel tank, bomb, and pilot, all in the photographed plastic bag.

Re: HM P-400 Review

Scoop is for the air racer version. Squadron in action for the P-39 shows the racer version with the scoop underneath the fuselage. Scoop could probably be a little more shallow.

So why is this part included with the P-400 model?

Is the pilot figure closer to the right size or is it a little boy again?

Re: HM P-400 Review

It could be a slipper tank. The P-400 were originally built for Britain, as I recall, and the British were more fond of slipper tanks than the US.
