Re: Best P-61 Nose Art Poll

Found a source which indicates there might have been four P-61 aces. Think I have found three, 1st Lt. Herman E. Ernst, Lt. Paul A. Smith and Lt Eugene D. Axtell. have to do a little more digging to see what turns up.

Brewster Buffalo, Hawk 75A, Fokker D.XXI, Polikarpov I-16, Fiat G.50, Macchi C. 200, PZL P.11c, Fieseler Fi 156 Storch ,,,, now those are real planes.

Now those would be the ones I would like to see done. Kind of like Lady Glen with the loco kills on the side too.

Times'A'Wastin", was the plane of Maj. Carrol C. "Snuffy" Smith and his R/O, Lt Philip Porter.Maj. "Snuffy" Smith was the highest ranking American nocturnal ace in World War II with the total of 7 kills. Four of them were achieved in this plane during the course of one night, December 29, 1944, when he shot down two Irvings, one Rufe, and one Frank, expending only 382 rounds!

This one gets my vote. I've seen reference material with drawings of that particular P-61 and I love the nose art.

Re: Best P-61 Nose Art Poll

Put me down for one Lady in the Dark and that OD green one with the woman lying on the moon - I have seen a picture of a model someplace. I would definitely be picking both of those up!

Re: Best P-61 Nose Art Poll

I just haven't voted since I can't decide. If HM did make all these schemes, I'd get one olive drab and 2 black ones. I guess Lady in the Dark would be my choice if was only to buy one.

Some others for consideration:
These are from the PYN decals page.

Re: Best P-61 Nose Art Poll

In the European theatre, there was an additional complication because some of the Black Widow kills were against unmanned V-1 'buzz bombs". Should these V-1s kills be included in the count? If V-1s are included, and if both pilots and radar operators are to be given credit for the kill, in Europe, there were two sets of pilots and radar operators who achieved six victories.

V-1 kills weren't counted as "kills" in the official count by the RAF, and I know of a few pilots who had their share of luck against the buzz-bomb (RAF/RCAF, some in double digits of V-1s destroyed), so I would assume that the USAF thought along the same lines.

I don't like reggae. I love it.
