Question Re: Oily Models?

So what's with the oil, anyway?

Where and why is it introduced in the production process?

Re: Oily Models?

My Maridor Spit arrived with oily wings-simply wiped it off with no problem what so ever.

My Maridor Spit came with oil spots and no canopy, luckily my retailer is fixing the canopy issue for me. The oil just wiped off without a problem.

On a side note, I didn't think the "no canopy" issue was going to be a problem as I ordered some vacu-form replacements to see if they would work. Unfortunately, they don't. When HM modified the fuselage to accomodate the opening canopy, they did it just enough so the aftermarket parts won't fit.

Re: Oily Models?

Oil on my HMs? No. Oil on my Wittys? YES! I think it's coming from the plastic sheet that sits between the model and the plastic bubble.

Re: Oily Models?

I suspect that the 'oil' is linked to the manufacturing process of the plastic vacuform packaging - like 'cooking oil' when baking .

Re: Oily Models?

I wonder if it might be a releasing agent in the diecast process?

Brewster Buffalo, Hawk 75A, Fokker D.XXI, Polikarpov I-16, Fiat G.50, Macchi C. 200, PZL P.11c, Fieseler Fi 156 Storch ,,,, now those are real planes.

Thanks for that info, Harry. Hopefully, HM will follow through with William's suggestion to re-do the canopy for future high back variants.

Re: Oily Models?

Hi,

The oil, as I am informed, is some kind of "silicon oil". There is a "whitening effect" when you use super-glue. Hence, the oil is to prevent such "whitening" when we glue the parts together. It is harmless and approved.

Re: Oily Models?

the oily residue i believe is so supposed to sometimes keep metal clean of rust and keep it from being dirty, of course i dont think removing any oil will make your model ugly, i think it just helps clean it up if its in a dirty place or heavily used.
