Hey William,

Do your engineers and research staff using this book to get the markings, colors, paint schemes correct for the Soviet WWII aircraft:

Amazon.com: Soviet Air Force Fighter Colours 1941-45 (Classic Colours): Erik Pilawskii: Books

Regards,

Sergey

1/72nd Suggestions

IL2m3 would be a huge seller, so although it wouldn't be my first choice, I think it should be HM's.

Also very marketable would be Yak3 & Yak9, and La5 and La7.

I'd also go for the Pe2.

Hi Sergey,

Frankly, I don't know not so much about Soviet WWIII aircrafts. My basic reference is the Osprey book.
I will get a copy of the book you mentioned above.

Thank you.

Hello William,

Osprey books from the series Aircraft of the Aces have very good narratives and when it comes to VVS are very objective compared to others on the market. Unfortunately, most of them are over a decade old and color profiles rely on concept drawings from the 1980s being in some cases very inaccurate.

This more of a general advice, not Soviet models specific, but Classic Publications books, Luftwaffe in Focus journals, and various Mushroom publications as well as Squadron titles (for technical blueprints rather than color profiles) provide much more accurate information than Osprey and Concord books.

Regards,

Sergey

I have used this excellent book as a guide for Soviet fighter camouflage schemes and colors for a number of model repaint projects and recommend it highly.

Re: Suggestions For Hobby Master's First Two Soviet Molds

For the cold war era, I'd recommend the MiG-25. Probably the most significant cold war fighter based on all the fear and hysteria it produced. To a large extent, the F-15 was the result of that hysteria. Could easily get 4 Soviet, 1 Indian, 1 Algerian & 1 Armenian paint schemes.

I would love to have a MiG 25 Foxbat as well. You're right about the fear and hysteria it created for the West, up until one landed in Hakodate airport in Japan back in 1976 by a defecting Soviet pilot - Victor Belyenko. I still remember the headlines quite fondly when it broke out!

I remember reading the story of his pre and post defection. Funny how Mr. Belyenko couldn't believe the abundance of everything when he was taken shopping, he initially believed the U.S. government set up the shopping center to make him believe we had more than we really did as a Capitalistic ploy.

Re: Suggestions For Hobby Master's First Two Soviet Molds

I'll support an I-16,perhaps an early variant for Spanish Civil War and Chinese usage, and a second variant for the Russo-German war. Another thread was all up on the Yak9,and it looks like a good choise,as well. Both in 1:48th,please. IL2 looks like the flying tank it was supposed to be,but thats strictly IMHO. I 'm trying to limit myself to single seat fighter a/c (HA-HA)
