Re: And why not these beautifuls.......

The Draken and the Viggen are two that I have always liked. Have made at least a couple models of the Draken and one Viggen over the years.

My all time favorite non-U.S. modern fighters. Unfortunately, I doubt they will be made in diecast...

Re: And why not these beautifuls.......

I would love to have all three----even if it's wishful thinking. However my favorite Swedish warbird remains the SAAB 29, "flying barrel", reportedly Europe's first swept wing jet fighter( maiden flight September 1, 1948).

Cool plane and I wouldn't mind one but wasn't the Me 262 Europe and the world's first swept wing jet. I would be happy with any or all of the other three SAAB fighters especially the Gripen since the SAAF in being equipped with them.

Yep the Me 262 definitely had some sweep to it's wings.

You and CC are quite right about the ME-262, however books as illustrious as Rand McNally's" Guide to World Aircraft: Military 1945-1960" makes exactly that statement. There's no qualification, either---such as single engined fighter, which would excuse the ME-262 from consideration. The only answer that I can come up with is the date in the title. I guess they are referring only to post- WW II jets, although the text in the SAAB writeup doesn't say that. Interestingly, another book, "The World's Fighting Planes", authored by William green and Gerald Pollinger and revised in 1958, makes exactly the identical claim. Again, you are supposed to know that since the book is covering "modern" aircraft ( in other words, post-WW II ) that all references are relevant only to that time frame.

I'm not into jets (other than the 262), but the J35 would really make me reconsider that stance.

Re: And why not these beautifuls.......

My favorite Swedish jet has been the breathtakingly SUPERB J-32 Lansen, one of the neatest jet combat aircraft ever designed ! (with the F-11F Tiger, Vigilante, Mirages) Unfortunately, the variety of shemes would probably be too limited, for any diecast manufacturer to seriously consider it...(same thing for the spectacular Viggen, also operated by Sweden only)

On the other hand, the Draken and Gripen would make viable subjects. I would like both, but would prefer the Draken first.
