Re: Your #1 pick for Cold War ASW Aircraft

The real reason, a Shackleton does not look like a Lancaster. They look different. (Canopy looks closer to a Halifax than to a Lancaster)

Re: Your #1 pick for Cold War ASW Aircraft

Cardinal; I don't know how you could relate the Shack to the Lancaster. Different fuselage, wings, engines and tail feathers. It was designed as a replacement for the Maritime version of the Lancaster and grew out of the Lincoln. The Lincoln was designed late in WW2 as a long-range bomber which would operate with the U.S. forces in the Pacific. It could carry a big bomb load out of shorter airfields, thus operate closer to Japanese targets.Even the Mark 1 bore no resemblence to the Lanc. the Mark 2 had a different nose and the Mark 3 with tricycle landing gear, wing tip tanks etc. All versions had a fatter, deeper fuselage than the Lanc. The outer wings were from the Lincoln, totally different from the Lanc in shape, size etc. The vertical stabs. were a wider version of the Lincoln's.Lanc. Span; 102-0 ft Length; 69-4 ft. MTOW 72,000lbLinc. 120-0 98-3 82,000Shack 1. 120-0 77-6 86,000Shack 2. 120-0 89-3 86,000Shack 3. 120-0 92-6 100,000

Jetfan, my comments were made somewhat 'tongue in cheek' as there can never be "too many Lancasters" ... . Also, I'm very fond of the Avro Shackleton and definitely would buy one if it were to be made in diecast (1/72).

The Avro Shackleton and Avro Lancaster share the same pedigree with the Avro Lincoln being the 'bridge' between the two (the initial Shackleton was designated Lincoln ASR.3). They shared many design similarities but of course were very different given new developments, hence my previous comments that the Shackleton was "essentially a highly modified and developed Lancaster". Also, like the development of the Spitfire, the Lancaster had Rolls-Royce Merlin engines (as did the Lincoln) whereas the Shackleton had the more powerful Rolls-Royce Griffon engines with contra-rotating props. Either way, they are both superb aircraft .

One sheep to rule them all ...

Was the guy that designed the Shackleton French? Man, is it ugly! I vote for a Neptune in 1/72 scale.

This one winding down too. Anyone have any planes they still want to place a vote on in this category?

Re: Your #1 pick for Cold War ASW Aircraft

I'd like an S-3 Viking in 1/72 and/or 1/48 (very doable size-wise). You're right the Fairey-Gannet is fugly

Probably equally as ugly is the French built Alize.....like long lost brothers or too much inbreeding........

How dare you comparing the look of the Alizé to that of the Gannet ?!!!

The Alizé doesn't look worst than the Guardian, Skyraider or Tracker.

BTW I vote for the P2V Neptune.

Re: Your #1 pick for Cold War ASW Aircraft

1/72 Shackleton MR.3 for me followed by an AEW.2,MR.2,MR.1,then Neptune MR.1 (RAF version) and 1/72 Nimrod ,Gannet and Sea King ASaC7.

Rumours of a new 1/72 Shackleton MR.2 from Airfix next year .
