Re: Best planes if new to 1/72 collecting

Welcome Rob!

Any CW jets if money is no object (CW Tomcats over any other brand). Dragon F-15A & C models (D & E's are lacking), F-16A/C & D's, F-18C's and F-18E/F's(latest releases-older E/F's had incorrect airbrake). Hobby Master A-10's, Mig-21's, F-104's, A-4's & upcoming F-4's & F-100's and Witty F-15's.

Just my personal opinion.

Re: Best planes if new to 1/72 collecting

If it wasn't for Century Wings Tomcats, I may have never seriously taken up this hobby. (and essentially not exist on this forum )

These are what I have experience with:

Century Wings: Again, can't go wrong with any of them.

FOV: Latest VF-41 F-14 because it's almost as good as a CW Tomcat but cheaper

HM: I like my A-10, and A-4's a lot. The F-4 is looking to be another definite winner.

Dragon: F-16's are also decent. Landing gear and doors on all Dragons are generally a big PITA. If you're not a stickler for accuracy, their Tomcats aren't that bad (at least visually)

Witty: The F-15's are very nice, F-16's are decent. Avoid the F-14's unless you have knowledge/ abilities/ patience to correct the many many problems. Again, if you're not a stickler for accuracy, then it's your call. As for the Witty marshmallow aliens, they suck. I try to remove them if at all possible and it tends to work out. Some have glue that is much stronger than others and takes some force and a lot of caution.

Re: Best planes if new to 1/72 collecting

Thank you again everyone for the warm welcome and helpful information!

Could someone please post a picture of a 1/72 tomcat or hornet along side a 1/48 FM version? I just want to see the size difference between the two one more time before I start buying. I am spoiled with 1/48 in terms of size and bulk of the models and don't want to be to disappointed by the size difference. Any collectors who own both, do you think the 1/72 scale models are welcome additions to a mainly 1/48 and 1/35 scale collection or that I would be disappointed in them? I really think I want to start collecting at least the modern jet 1/72 scale models but just want to hear a few more opinions on the subject if you don't mind.

Re: Best planes if new to 1/72 collecting

I collect both scales but as for modern jets in 1:48 they are just to big to for me to put in my curios..
I have 6 or 7 F4 Phantoms, F-15 Eagle and a A-10 and let me tell you 1:48 scale is way bigger then the 1:72nd scale.
So i stopped collecting the 1:48 Modern fighters and went to the 1:72nd scale range with them.
Century Wings is the best of the best in the Modern fighters that they have to offer and Hobby Master is coming out with
their F4 Phantoms...They are looking good and be out in a few weeks...Witty IMHO makes the best F-15 while Dragon make the best Legacy Hornet .
I posted a picture of a Witty 1:72 vs. FM 1:48 F-15 nose to nose for you...Since i have them here right now.

Thanks STARMAN! Does seem quite a bit smaller but still large enough to be impressive when displayed.

You just wait till you see what HM will be doing ...The F4 Phantoms are looking good and they have a F-100 in the works too.
This is going to be a great year in 1:72nd.

Re: Best planes if new to 1/72 collecting

For me: Century Wing is the best, the CorsairII and Intruder is THE must.

Nearly century level come Hobby Master with more paints schemes and originals subjects than CW.

This 2 are the best for me.

Gemini Ace are very good also.

Welcome to the forum Sebring Rob. Many have commented on the American jets so those are well covered. Corgi does well with the British jets. Very under-rated is their Buccaneer which I think is a really good model. The Jaguar is pretty good too. The EE Lightning is nice but there are some issues with the shape of the nose. Can't think of anyone else making one though. I like their Hunters. I don't like their Harriers but maybe HM will do one for us. Too check them out you can visit this site Unofficial Corgi Aviation Archive

Good visual comparasion Starman. It kind of reminds me of the size of my wifes rear. The grey one before marriage, and the red, white, blue one after 10 years of marriage. Sorry, I just had to put that in as the opportunity was just too good to pass up. All kidding aside, there has been no change in size over the past 10 years. And I will make it up to her tomorrow for mothers day.
